Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Bennett desribes his experiences travelling and surveying in Ireland (1838-1840); his voyage on the `Lady Clarke' to Sydney and his brief stay there (1841) and the voyage to NZ in 1842. He gives his impressions of Kororareka and Russell (Okiato) including a lengthy discussion of Hone Heke's actions in Kororareka and writes further of his residence in Auckland and Wellington. Volume also has an appendix (50 page Maori word list) Bennett was with the Royal Engineers. In 1844 he was in Kerikeri but after being ill for some months, died in 1845. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Includes details about activities aboard the ship, day excursions at port cities - Gibralter [sic] with a Portguese guide called Joseph Buzaglo; Naples and Pompeii ruins with Mr Cook & Son (Tour guides); Port Said; Colombo at the Oriental Hotel and vehicle tour with Mr Cohen; Albany, West Australia; Melbourne; and final port Sydney. 25 Mar - 3 Apr: Describes time in Sydney staying at the 'Australia Hotel', and travels at to the Blue Mountains and Kaloomba [sic]. 4 - 8 Apr : Describes the voyage on the ship 'Mararoa' from Sydney to Australia, and the unpleasant conditions on board. 9 - 19 Apr : Describes travel through the North Island from Auckland to Wellington on buggy and rail. Includes detailed description of visit to Whakarewarewa and hot pools area of Rotorua with tour guides Mr Cook & Son, staying at the 'Geyser Hotel', observations of Maori, cruise on Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island, the story of Hinemoa and Tutauakie [sic], temple to the 'God of the Sweet Potato', Hamurana Stream, use of Maori language, Okere and Tutea Falls, Tikitere, Waiatapu Valley, Mount Tarawera eruption, Wairakie [sic], Huka Falls, Lake Taupo, Tarawera, the strains of buggy travel, Napier, train to Wellington, stay at the 'Occidential Hotel', pre European Maori times, and land ownership. 19 - 21 Apr : Describes voyage on the ship 'Penguin', from Wellington to Port Chalmers, via Lyttelton. Includes retrospective general observations of New Zealand and Maori. 1 - 5 May : Describes Hobart, trip to Brown's River and train to Launceston. 7 - 8 May : Describes the voyage on the ship 'Patenna' from Launceston to Melbourne. 9 - 12 May : Describes time in Melbourne and the economy. 12 May - 3 July : Describes the return home voyage on the ship 'Ormuz' from Melbourne. Includes day excursions at port cities Adelaide, Colombo, Port Said, Naples, and Gibraltor; mentions 'Bluejackets' naval officers onboard, the frustration of the ship being quarantined in Colombo due to scarlet fever, the recreation onboard, and final entry mentions passing the ship 'Orient' outward bound. Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area.
