Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). Image no. 25 has identification which reads "Organs - Sandstone cliffs on Mahaka (Mohaka?) River, Hawke's Bay. Image no. 34 shows Samuel Butler's cottage at Mesopotamia Station; and no. 56 probably shows the Cass Field Station. Many of the images by Marcel Kurz show mountaineers, bivouacs and camping sites in the mountains, including the Pioneer Ridge Bivvy. Image no. 133, taken by Marcel Kurz shows Ned Porter, Clive Barker and Doris Barker (later Mrs Porter), on the second ascent of Mount Haidinger in 1927. Most identified places are listed above. Description: Photographs of mountaineering, mountain views and mountain huts in the Southern Alps taken by W D Frazer (engine driver, mountaineer and photographer in Otira). A number of unidentified people are seen, who may be linked to the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. Most locations are identified in ink or pencil on verso of photographs. Broken numbering sequence by the photographer appears on some of the images. (Where the photographer's number has been given it is added in brackets after the subject in next paragraph). Mundy album 1

Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s). Godber album 10

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining.
