Description: A-036-028: A view from the north bank of the Whanganui River of the railway bridge at Aramoho, leading into Wanganui township, with a steam train on the bridge. A-036-028: Mangawhero waterfall amidst bush and rocks. A-036-029. A twig of rata in flower. Painted on celluloid mounted by corners on paper backing Some images were mounted out of order when the Library acquired them, hence the numbering 3, 4 and 14 for this group. Possibly produced by Wanganui firm A D Willis and Co. The firm began producing cards, including paintings on celluloid, from 1882. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Photographs relating to Herbert Spackman and his family and relatives, chiefly taken by him. Places include views of Wellington and bays, Eketahuna and the Wanganui district. Very few of the people shown are fully identified but are likely to be Harry Spackman’s: mother (Eliza Spackman, nee Hawkings), father (Henry Spackman), brother, mother-in-law (Mrs Coxall, mother of Harry’s first wife Amy), and father-in-law (Mr Parnell, father of Fanny Parnell, Harry's second wife). Several houses are shown, including: ‘Rangiuru’, located at 63 Hutt Road, Petone, Wellington; House of Eketahuna farmer David S Lowe; House of David S Lowe’s brother Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wanganui, both interior and exterior, ‘Ben Venuto’ situated at 59 Rintoul Street and house of Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wellington, both interior and exterior views. Herbert Spackman's nephew Roy Spackman (Clement Roy) attended Wanganui Collegiate School, and there are several views of the chapel (interior and exterior) and the music room. Description: Shows `Matara', the homestead of H Harper at Wai Ora, Aramoho, Wanganui, in the 1890s. The Whanganui River runs alongside on the left, the farmhouse and outbuildings are on cleared flat land with a slight indication of a garden, fences and rows of trees. Two horses (or cows) are grazing near the river. Flax in the foreground In 1859, Mary Medley's sister, Laura, married Thomas Henry Harper of Wai Ora, Aramoho, Whanganui. Thomas Henry Harper died in 1873. This view is likely to show the Wai Ora property of his son, Henry Harper, nephew of the artist.
