Description: Album of photographs mostly of towns and buildings in Canterbury and Otago, chiefly taken by the Burton Brothers, circa 1880s. They all show city scenes including street views, and images of important buildings. The buildings include church buildings, bank buildings, insurance company office buildings, and hotels (both exterior and interior views of the Grand Hotel, Dunedin). In the North Island, there is a view of the Auckland Synagogue, and a view of Taratahi Homestead, the home of Lady Tancred and Sir Thomas Tancred, in the Carterton District. Description: Photograph of St Mary's Church, corner of Karori Road and Fancourt Street, Karori, Wellington, taken by Rev William James Hands circa 1930s-1940s, and titled 'The Campanile'. Other - This photograph was exhibited by the Auckland and Wellington camera clubs, and possibly by the Dunedin Photographic Society. (see stickers and stamps on back of item). Source of title - Title supplied by Library Source of descriptive information - Photographic Archive accessions librarian believes this image to be taken by Rev William James Hands as opposed to Rev Alfred Watson Hands who left New Zealand to return to England in 1887. Approximate date of the photograph given after discussions with Photographs Conserator Mark Strange and former Photograph Curator John Sullivan. Physical Description: Silver gelatin print 34.4 x 27.7 cm, in frame 52 x 42.4 cm Provenance: Donated by Rachel Brown, Wellington, 2013. The photograph was bought in the 1950s by Dorothy and Laurie Brown, the donor's parents. Dorothy was a Karori resident as a child.

Description: Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch, with spire being rebuilt after the 1901 earthquake. Photographer unidentified. The nave, tower and spire of Christchurch Cathedral was completed in 1881. Work on completeing the rest of the building began in 1900. In 1902 the transcepts were finished and work started on the chancel and apse. An earthquake in 1901 cracked the upper part of the spire in two places. In this photograph which dates from late 1902/1903 (see scaffolding beyond the transcept indicating work on chancel) the upper part of the spire has been removed by Messrs Graham and Greig in preparation for replacing this section with a copper covered wooden structure. The Cathedral was completed in 1904. (Information from "Vision and Reality; Christchurch Cathedral in the Square," Colin Brown, Christchurch, 2000 and "A Dream of Spires," Ian Lochhead, Canterbury University Press, 1999, page 153.) Preparation for erecting the scaffolding was reported in the Christchurch Star 15 January 1902. The cross was replaced on the top of the new copper covered wooden section of the spire on 29 June 1903. Source of descriptive information - Notes on file print.
