Description: A set of vignettes, headed 'The Christchurch Press last week celebrated its jubilee'. At the top left, are two people wrapped up in newspapers (the Press and the Lyttelton Times) shaking hands above a sea marked 'politics' and titled 'hands across the sea'. Top right, two large hands, one marked England, one Germany, pushing the Prince of Wales (later George V) and a German princess towards one another to accompany a text -' it is whispered that there are prospects of a match between the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Germany'. Below that is an angry man holding a Post Office savings box, with accompanying text 'Once money has been placed in the new Post Office money boxes it cannot be removed except by the P. O. officials. The man had been hoping to retrieve money to catch a tram. Below that is a drawing titled 'The other cheek' and featuring Prime Minister William Massey, holding his lower back and facing Auckland M. P. George Fowlds. Surrounding text explains that Massey has offered to pay Fowlds' expenses if he would tour New Zealand repeating his Pukekohe speech. Centre left is an Irish musical group, one with an Irish harp, with Christchurch tossing them coins - 'The Irish envoys on tour in their specialty 'Shell out for Liberty'. To the right is 'The catch of the season' showing a man leaping to catch a ball with accompanying text explaining that Dan Reese anticipates no trouble in rasing the £2000 for Lancaster Park. Bottom left is a scene in Cathedral Square showing the statue of John Robert Godley on top of a tram shelter, with a clock for a face, 'next tram' for a hat, and one arm pointing to Railway, the other to Opawa. The accompanying text reads 'The good old tram-shelter - Godley statue question has cropped up again... Why not do away all sentiment & put the statue to some practical use?'. At the bottom right is William Massey swinging a cat labelled 'Supreme Court allocation' facing 'Mrs Conservative Press'. The accpmanying text reads 'Mrt Massey in spite of the protests of a section of the Opposition press continues to support Mr Allen's legislation for Supreme Court judges. Description: Flyer reproducing the text of a message sent to three politicians, asking the the contract to supply wool to the Empire should last until the end of the war and then for three further months. Wool-growers also ask to be able to take back control of their sales and marketing, "subject to any legislation the Imperial or New Zealand parliaments may impose in order to provide restrictions preventing our wool reaching any enemy ...". Description: Vignettes on current issues. The record buster shows the Minister of Railways, John Millar, seated astride a train, 'prosperity' with a caption about the record profits of New Zealand Railways. A Scotsman in uniform with a very long sporran illustrates a report of an article about Scots soldiers having their kilts taken from them, but not their sporrans. Sir Joseph Ward is depicted as a dog tangled up in rope, 'dedicated to Mr D Jones' with a reference to giving a dog a long enough rope and he'll hang himself. 'Magician Poole' is shown placing an extinguisher, National Prohibition' over a barrel of alcohol. 'Messrs Allen and Herries are conducting the Opposition campaign, shows James Allen and William Herries flogging an almost dead horse, 'The Conservative Party'. Description: Flyer advertises a showing of a film authorised by Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, involving 5000 New Zealand soldiers, and based on Barrie Marschel's poem "The Kid from Timaru", about a soldier with the surname Kidd. Barrie Marschel recited his poem "as the films unfold". The flyer states that the film had already had seasons in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The front of the flyer shows a reproduction of a advertisement for the movie with an oval portrait of Barrie Marschel in a straw hat. The border of the flyer shows a design based on laurels. The verso reproduces the poem "The kid from Timaru". A rubber stamp shows the name of the name, place, and theatre where the screening was to take place (Waihi Academy Theatre, 25 April 1918 - ie Anzac Day) "The flame of the Yukon" was a 1917 silent film starring Dorothy Dalton and directed by Charles Miller.
