Description: Herbert Nelson Hawker standing beside the De Havilland DH9 that he piloted from Blenheim to Nelson, with its two passengers J W Perano and H McArtney. This was the second passenger flight and the second aircraft to reach Nelson. Photographed on 13th November 1921 by Frederick Nelson Jones in Nelson. Library client identified the pilot, provided information about his training, and information about the first flight to Nelson, September 2010. The first aircraft to land in Nelson (Stoke) was an Avro 504K piloted by Captain P K (Shorty) Fowler with Tom Newman as his passenger. Tom Newman paid £100 for the flight from Wellington on the 11th of November 1921. Tom Ranesh, aircraft mechanic, was also on board. Information from "High Noon for Coaches 1879-1979," John Halkel Millar (with additional chapters by Graham Spencer), AH & AW Reed, Wellington 1979.
