Description: Hohua Ahowhenua inside the Te Wai o Turongo meeting house at Waharoa, near Matamata. Photograph taken, probably between 1880 and 1887, by Hemus & Hanna. This portrait, according to Mona Gordon in "The golden age of Josiah Clifton Firth" (p 193), was commissioned by Josiah Clifton Firth, a long-time friend of Hohua. Description: Ngāti Hauā group at Te Wai o Turongo meeting house at Waharoa, near Matamata. Seated in the centre of the group is Hohua Ahowhenua (d 1889). Photograph taken between 1880 and 1887 by Hemus & Hanna of Auckland. Other - Note that 1/2-018166 is a similar image This negative is part of a sequence which includes a portrait of Hohua Ahowhenua which was commissioned by Josiah Clifton Firth. The original negatives for these images, which are now part of the Alexander Turnbull Library collections, are dry plates, which would indicate that they were taken after 1880, but before Firth's departure from his Matamata estate in July 1887. In "Nation making" (pp 260-261) Firth states that after his departure Hohua was abandoned in the runanga house by his people. This photograph would appear to have been taken before this. The negatives form part of the collection of Herman Schmidt. Schmidt in 1904 took over the studio of Hemus & Hanna, who are therefore most likely to have taken the images. Description: Group of Ngāti Hauā Māori, outside Te Wai O Turongo meeting house, near Matamata. Hohua Ahowhenua is seated in the centre, with staff. Photograph taken by either Charles Hemus or John Robert Hanna, circa 1880s. Note that 1/1-001887 (and its copy neg 1/2-041315) is very similar photograph belonging to the Schmidt Collection, therefore, if they are dated circa 1870s, they would have been taken by either John Robert Hanna or Charles Hemus. This photograph is part of a sequence which includes a portrait of Hohua Ahowhenua which was commissioned by Josiah Clifton Firth. Description: Booklet issued on the occasion of the opening of a new wharenui at the Raungaiti marae, at Tamihana, just north of Waharoa, in the Waikato on Saturday 28 November 2015. The hapū at the marae was Ngāti Te Oro, of the Ngāti Hauā iwi. The booklet contains photographs of the new whare (Te Oro), a list of te mana whenua o Ngāti Te Oro, and a whakapapa, a short account of Raungaiti Marae and photographs of Wiremu Tamihana and Kingi Tawhiao, as well as photographs of Ko Hohua Ahowhenua, Te Wai o Turongo, and Tupu Atanatiu Taingakawa Te Waharoa ratou ko Te Paea Tiaho.
