Description: Topographic map of Kapiti Island with some described features and named vegetation. Includes the site of an anchorage adjacent to Motungarara Island and Kapiti Island. Ink blotches obliterate parts of the map Kapiti Island includes numerous Maori placenames and named streams. Pa sites and former Maori settlements are marked, as are whaling stations and a cavern, formerly a burial ground. Sites of mutton birds are marked as are water supplies, walking tracks, the site of an old homestead and old cultivations. Tokumapuna Island, 1.2.21 [acres] includes the site of the main whaling station and named rocks which are covered at high water are named. Description: Topographic map of the Oruamatua Kaimanua Block bordered by the Moawhango and Rangitikei Rivers. Other blocks adjoining are Rangipowaiau, Kaimanua No.3, Ohaoko, Awarua Block No.2, Mangaohane No.1. Includes entirely Maori names of settlements and people. Description: Survey map showing subdivisions of Pt. 3c, Akura Block, Block IV Tiffen, situated 3 km north of Masterton, Southern Wairarapa, between Waiopoua and Waingawa rivers. Shows the first subdivisions into 3c 1, 3c 2, 3c 4. 3c is shown bounded by 3b to the left and 3a, d and b to the left and 5 1 below. Akura no.2 is to the right. The name Akura means 'entrance to a fortified pa'. Shows two roads, Akura Road and Kibblewhite Road. Part 3c specifies the location of the urupa (17) or cemetery on the roadside of Kibblewhite Road. Also specifies five subdivisions or lots of land on Pt 3c 4 (1100 each) belonging to members of the Karaitiana family: Waha o te Rangi Karaitiana, Ote ne Kuku Karaitiana, Arawhita Karaitiana and Te Ouai Karaitiana. Shows some measurement 'by old surveyors'. Inset of part of the Kibblewhite Rd's centre showing cement blocks, probably added at a later date. Under title is written "M.O. Ckd. H.R." Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Copy of a hand-drawn map of two adjointing sections of farm land adjacent to the Harataunga Harbour, now known as Kennedy Bay, and bordered by the Whareroa and Ohinau Streams, Puketutu and Kaotara Hills and Rangitahi. One section has the names of Nathan Kennedy & Brothers, while the second has McGregor & Atkinson's names, together with acreages. The McGregor & Atkinson property includes the location of a sawmill and wharf, buildings are indicated and one is named 'Mr. Atkinson's'. A handwritten note on the original, written within this section states 'Grant to J. Cruikshank, Nov. 26th., 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Within the section of Nathan Kennedy & brothers, the note states 'Grant to Mr. J. Kennedy, Nov 26th, 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Includes references to Native land and Mr. D. Lowe's land. On the opposite side of the harbour, a settlement is marked and the site of a Maori church. A handwritten note on the top left states: 'The copy of a map deposited in this office. ... Description: Manuscript map of Maori geographical placenames between Patea and Waitotara, from Tawhitinui, Tiratahi, Mangaehu and Pourangi near Waitotara south to Matangirei, Taumaha, Ruatanewha, Whenuakura, Tokapapa near Patea. More than seventy placenames are identified on the map. A whare is depicted north of Patea. Several areas have two placenames with an asterisk between them, for example Matangirei * Turi, Huiakama * Raikatu, Ihirangi * Tuanewa, Tirotirowhetu * Tuirirangi, Teareiorauru * Tara. Under the name Ihirangi is a small unidentifiable sketch. Map includes ownership phrases such as 'Tenei te whenua Tutawa'(This is Tutawa's land', 'Tenei te Turanga Takanga', 'Tenei te whenua Rakei' in the Patea area and 'Tene te whenua Tutawa' and 'Tene te whenua Turanga Takanga' in Waitotara area. The map title is reversed and upsidedown. The map signature is illegible. Brandmark on tracing material: '...The Vellum Tracing Cloth...Sagars Patents...' Description: Topographic map of 2559 acres of the Taupo Swamp includes part of the coastline and the land behind. Adjoining areas are marked as Crown Land, Motuhara and Haukopua East, both of which were surveyed by Wyles and Buck. An area has been pencilled as Native Reserve. Streams are marked, Taupo and Hokiku Creeks are named. Bearings have been checked, some added, while discrepancies have been noted. The Motuhara Plan is referred to in connection with boundaries. Description: A base map of the Rotorua district has numerous added notes, handwritten in the margins and over the top half of the map itself. These cover a variety of topics and include names of individuals, Maori chiefs, where they lived with some events and occupations. Multiple Maori place names are included with descriptive notes in English. Some dates are recorded with details of battles and numbers killed. Topographical features are marked, such as land cave, waterfall, hot spring and unrelated references such as a note about a half-full kete of tawa berries. Names include: Pirimi Mataiawea, Gilbert Mair, N'whakane, Paddy Murphy - deserter from Imperial Regt., Te Waharoa, T.H. Smith - Maketu, Tamati te Aorangi - Maori war veteran. Description: A cadastral lithograph map of the Auckland Land District has been used to focus on Māori settlements in the immediate area around the Kawhia and Aotea Harbours which is outlined in blue pencil and is numbered Map No. 4. All settlement names are written in Māori and the more recent names have been crossed out including names of Mission Stations. Handwritten names are Makomako, Owhakarito, Horoure, Motungaio, Pouwewe, Ahure, Ngatoka-Kairere Isle, Hikupoarea [Pa], Titirimatangi Pt., Te Arawi, Te Kawau, Whenuapao, Taharoa Lake. The battle site of Te Kakara is marked. One road is labelled 'Modern road' and some parish boundaries and streams have 'x' handwritten at regular intervals along their length. A key to these places, handwritten in pencil on the left side of the outline, include references, e.g. 'p.8', which are possibly page numbers, but without any explanation.
