He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: In closely-written pages, Card describes in detail his voyage on HMS `Fantome' to Sydney, where he transhipped to the `Havannah' on 24 Nov 1851. He describes his voyages to and around New Zealand, to Fiji and Tonga, before returning to Australia and New Zealand in November 1853, where his captain died. He writes of his life and loves in Sydney and Brisbane from 1854 to Mar 1855, when he is reposted to England. Description: The log contains an account of the voyage of the Vigilant which left London in Oct 1831, rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed for Indonesia. Calls were made at Timor (Mar-Jun 1832) and Ternate (Jul-Aug). The Vigilant then sailed north to New Guinea, whaled in New Ireland waters (Sep-Dec) and continued to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand (21 Feb-23 Mar 1833). Subsequent calls were made at Tongatapu, Tonga (29 Jun-5 Jul), Tutuila, Samoa (10-12 Jul), Bay of Islands (14-30 Oct; 30 Jan-4 Feb 1834), Norfolk Island (20-21 Feb), Bay of Islands (31 Mar-30 Apr), `Eua, Tonga (30 -31 May), Vava'u, Tonga (15-22 Jun), Manu'a, Samoa (25-27 Juun, 7-11 Sep), Savai'i, Samoa (2-4 Sep), Sydney (19 Oct-24 Nov), Bay of Islands (28 Feb-18 Mar 1835).
