Description: A cadastral lithograph map of the Auckland Land District has been used to focus on Māori settlements in the immediate area around the Kawhia and Aotea Harbours which is outlined in blue pencil and is numbered Map No. 4. All settlement names are written in Māori and the more recent names have been crossed out including names of Mission Stations. Handwritten names are Makomako, Owhakarito, Horoure, Motungaio, Pouwewe, Ahure, Ngatoka-Kairere Isle, Hikupoarea [Pa], Titirimatangi Pt., Te Arawi, Te Kawau, Whenuapao, Taharoa Lake. The battle site of Te Kakara is marked. One road is labelled 'Modern road' and some parish boundaries and streams have 'x' handwritten at regular intervals along their length. A key to these places, handwritten in pencil on the left side of the outline, include references, e.g. 'p.8', which are possibly page numbers, but without any explanation. Handwritten note on back reads: Te Maika Kawhia Harbour - We were camping here for a forthnight with the Babbages and Robertsons of Wanganui. Robertsons 10 tonner yacht lies in front of our camp - Kentish Cherry trees in foreground - Maori up the tree picking - note white [church full at baso!]. NB. Our tent was under some cherry trees oposite the 6' x 8' tent you see in picture but is not visible as it was protected by the tree - it has no poles and is suspended at the [apex] , the entrance is laced at one angle and it only weighs a little over a pound complete _ picture drawn. Description: Drawn on a published cadastral map of the Karewa Township, annotations highlight the native reserve sections in block 1 (14-20, 33-35, 2, 4) and block 2 (22-26, 37, 42-43, 65-66, 71-72, 77, 78, 90-91), sections not to be dealt with at present (block 1, 21-32), police reserve, school site, government buildings reserve, public hospital reserve, M.R., as well as unidentified sections highlighted in blue. The township is on the boundary of the Maketu block, the Kawhia 'M' and 'P' blocks and the Kawhia Harbour. A note on the police reserve reads 'Secs 45 & 46 . I ML 3263 granted to W. C. Scott'.
