Description: Contains research notes, typewritten and handwritten waiata and newspaper clippings. Includes `A Maori love-song': Whakapukupuke ai au-e! Te roimata i aku kamo...; and an article about `The death leap of Tikawe' with annotations. Also includes `Tangi song' chanted by Takarongi [Takarangi] Mete Kingi and others at the tangihanga ceremony over the late Premier, at Parliament House, Wellington, June 21st, 1906: Whakaronga [whakarongo?] e te rau, tenei te tupuna o te mate, ka iri kia au, i tipu i te Reinga... Another `Tangi song' sung by Wi Pere and other East Coast natives: Haere ra e Koro! Koutou ko matua - unuhia i te rito o te harakeke ka tu i te aroakapa... Also a `Ngai Tahu dirge' sung by Timoti Whiua and Tioti Ropitini [George Robinson] of Wairewa Little River, Canterbury: Pu ma uru, e riringi mai nei-i-e!... Also includes a waiata tangi (mo Te Awaawa, rangatira o Ngati Whakaue mo tona matenga): Ka moe koa Taupiri [Taupori?] o te rewarewa, e tu tai ana ra te Kauika taramea... Also a waiata with translation entitled `Tongakohu's lament. The Maori fairy chief's farewell to Ngongotaha Mount'. Other typewritten and handwritten waiata and extracts. A typewritten chant `The sword chant of Thorstein Raudi' [possibly typed by B Stowell?]. Letter to Cowan by P Buck dated 20th Dec 1922, discusses Cowan having loan of Buck's France diaries and Gallipoli diary. Miscellaneous letters, documents and papers - Official and private

Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale. Description: These volumes contain copies of correspondence recieved and despatched. Includes reports from McLean to Governor Eyre about the return migration of sections of the Te Ati Awa from Waikanae and Arapaoa (South Island) to Taranaki and the Crown's desire to completely extinguish native title; various reports and correspondence about the Rangitikei Block and includes notes by McLean made at one of the land meetings in 1849; list of names of rangatira [24] who have a claim to the 40,000 acre Whanganui land block of the NZ Company. Also includes a report by McLean about the activities (and some agressions) of Te Rangihaeata and his desire to fight continued European encroachment and a copy of a letter by Te Rangihaeata to chiefs in Kawhia seeking their assistance to revenge the capture of Te Rauparaha and their reply refusing to assist him Language - Some in Maori Arrangement: qMS-1206-1212 are boxed together Quantity: 7 volume(s). Includes lists of names for Maori living at Parewanui; report from a meeting between Governor Grey, Major Kemp (Te Ranghiwinui), and various hapu from Whanganui; a letter about Epiha Patapu, native policeman from Whanganui who gave an oath of allegience to the Queen. Also includes letter from Wikitoa Taringakuri (aka Te Kaeaea) offering to sell large amounts of land in Wellington because of his extreme age and inability to collect the rents of his properties.
