Description: New Zealand Prime Minister Keith Holyoake is trying to lassoo a bounding kangaroo labelled 'Tasman Trade Bias', watched by a gleeful group of Australian Trade Minister McEwen and 'Australian Trade Lobby'. Exhibition caption reads - The NAFTA agreement, signed in 1966, made a start to freeing up trade between New Zealand and Australia, but over the next 17 years the ratio was generally strongly in Australia's favour. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003. Description: Four cartoons all featuring David Lange. The first, by Trace Hodgson shows Lange talking to Ronald Reagan and Bob Hawke, Reagan and Hawke are dressed as gangsters and Reagan says, `We want to be your friends, David, we want to look after you. So play the game or we'll smash your kneecaps in! Right, Bob?' Hawke replies `Right boss'; Bob Brockie, shows Bob Hawke being sprayed in the face with a cannister with a peace sign on it as he passes through New Zealand customs. Hawke says, `Starve the lizards Lange, this stuff gets up my nose!', to which Lange replies, `Helps clear the mind'; Chicane, shows Lange in a pair of swimming togs riding a surfboard in a nuclear free Pacific. Lange says, `If you want to rule the waves... you have to be prepared to waive the rules'. Gordon Minhinnick, shows Lange in the Pacific, looking like the famous statue by Michaelangelo, with America and France coming to get him. The caption reads, "`David,' by Michael Langelo". Description: Shows a cheerful looking pair of boys, trying to reassure Clement Attlee, the despairing English Prime Minister, who is seated at a desk on the left, having trouble dealing with Socialism. The governments of New Zealand and Australia were opposed politicially for only three or four years out of four decades from the early 1940s onwards. Labour was in power in New Zealand from 1945-1949 and in Australian from 1941 to 1949. Clement Attlee's Labour Party won office in Britain at the end of the Second World War, remaining in government until 1951. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F.
