Description: There are three scenes in this cartoon. In the top right some men and a woman are walking along twisting their arms and hands into contortions. One man is saying he never knows what to do with his hands when he doesn't smoke. In the lower left Jim Bolger, the Minister of Labour, is sitting with his hand over his face. In his other hand he is holding a newspaper with the headline 'Kinleith shutdown unions vote to stop mill smoking on April 8'. This is a reference to the strikes in early 1980 at the Kinleith pulp and paper mill. In the lower right Muldoon is reading a memo on the smoke free day fron George Gair, the Minister of Health. Muldoon is proclaiming that he's not going 'to stop smoking-out reds for even one day" - a reference to his dislike of socialist and communists. Description: Shows the Clutha River flowing through a canyon. On one side stand Clyde Dam workers hammering a sign into the ground which demands a 15 per cent pay rise. On the other side are Muldoon and Bill Birch wearing a hard hat. Muldoon is angrily refusing to meet the workers' demands. At the bottom of the canyon two scientists from the D.S.I.R. Description: This cartoon refers to the pay disputes at the NZ Forest Products pulp and paper mill in Kinleith and the Caxton and Tasman mills in Kawerau. Muldoon and another man are painting the centre road lines on forestry roads. The road in one direction has a road sign 'Kinleith no exit' and pointing in the other direction the sign reads 'Caxton by pass'. The roads join to make one road and the road lines are crossing over one another and are broken. The man is saying to Muldoon "we seem to have got our guide lines crossed". Description: There are two scenes in this cartoon. In the upper scene three of Muldoon's retinue are succumbing to 'Delhi belly' and clutching their stomachs while Muldoon asks them why they can't be like him and 'ignore complaints'. Muldoon was in New Delhi attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Back in New Zealand the Social Credit party had won the East Coast Bays by-election over the National Party. At the same time a plan was being formulated by some M.P.s to oust Muldoon as leader and replace him with Brian Talboys (this was the so-called Colonels' Coup). In the lower scene in the cartoon sick-looking M.P.s are gathering outside the National Party Caucus room. One of them observes that the others looks pretty sick and asks if they have 'Delhi belly' too. He is told that it's much worse - 'it's East Coast Bays daze'. Brian Talboys is trying to comfort George Gair while others are trying to work out the cause of their discomfort. Description: Shows Muldoon dreaming about Think Big and holding plans for the aluminium smelter and a pulp mill. Darts (Alu-Suisse and C.S.R.) pop his dreams. He stands surrounded by the tatters of Think Big telling C.S.R. to make a decision about proceeding or the government will find someone else. C.S.R. was an Australian company which proposed the Aramoana smelter with two other companies: Alusuisse and Fletcher Holdings.
