Description: There are three scenes in this cartoon. In the top right some men and a woman are walking along twisting their arms and hands into contortions. One man is saying he never knows what to do with his hands when he doesn't smoke. In the lower left Jim Bolger, the Minister of Labour, is sitting with his hand over his face. In his other hand he is holding a newspaper with the headline 'Kinleith shutdown unions vote to stop mill smoking on April 8'. This is a reference to the strikes in early 1980 at the Kinleith pulp and paper mill. In the lower right Muldoon is reading a memo on the smoke free day fron George Gair, the Minister of Health. Muldoon is proclaiming that he's not going 'to stop smoking-out reds for even one day" - a reference to his dislike of socialist and communists. Description: Shows the Clutha River flowing through a canyon. On one side stand Clyde Dam workers hammering a sign into the ground which demands a 15 per cent pay rise. On the other side are Muldoon and Bill Birch wearing a hard hat. Muldoon is angrily refusing to meet the workers' demands. At the bottom of the canyon two scientists from the D.S.I.R. Police are searching and frisking spectators on entry to the grounds to prevent protestors from disrupting the game. Description: Shows three scenes. In the top right a helicopter hovers above the pitch providing an escape route for the referee. In the lower left the referee is wearing a special camouflage suit which allows only his head, hands and boots to be visible. In the lower right the players have to be warned not to step on the landmines which have been placed between the pitch and the spectators. Refers to crowd disturbances at Mt Smart stadium on 10 October in which the referee was attacked by spectators. There was a possibility that F.I.F.A. would move the N.Z. versus Saudi Arabia match in November 1981 to a neutral location, possibly in Australia, to avoid violence. It was also suggested that the violence was a hangover from the disruptions which occurred during the 1981 Sprinbok tour of New Zealand.
