Description: Photographs of a military parade on Lambton Quay as part of the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York consisting of teams of eight horses pulling small carriages on their way to the Battery with spectators lining the street; No.3 Gun Detachment at a military tournament in November 1891 at Hutt Race Course standing with their gun the participants being Sgt Carter, Br Daniels, Gunners Brown, Petrie, Curtis, Bott, Renwick, Raynor, and Quilice(?); No.1 (Gun Detachment?) with their gun, standing next to a tent in Miramar in 1898 the participants being Gibson, Coombes, Coleman, Pettiecuck(?), Lyon, Boyes, Fraser, Feeney, Hill, Brown, Spence, Courtney, and Truman; and a large group of men possibly of D battery of Wellington militia holding poles with paddles at the end with circles painted on them (markers). Description: Album of photographs, mostly relating to New Zealanders in the South African War, but also including many which show the D Battery, 1st New Zealand Mounted Rifles at various military camps in the Wellington region. Many show groups of soldiers, with surnames noted. One view shows the Opening of Parliament in 1898, with a parade of D Battery; and a few show the opening of the Star Boating Club in Wellington. Some images taken by unidentified photographers, some probably taken by Thomas Watson Brown. The earliest image was taken in 1878, and shows a home in Masterton; another image shows a work picnic with a group in a tug-of-war at Day's Bay, in 1912; a group portrait of staff in the Mines Department taken in Wellington, 1907; and a group portrait of the 10th anniversary reunion of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, held in Wellington, 21.10.1909, taken by Zak Studios, No. 7275. Description: Detachment of the 65th Regiment on parade on Mount Eliot, New Plymouth, in March 1861. Shows a medal being presented, possibly by Lt Colonel Young. Photographer unidentified. On 29 March 1861 Lt Colonel Young of 65th Regiment presented medals for long and faithful service to Sergeant John Crowder and Privates James Furlong and Joseph Greensmith (see article in 'The Taranaki Herald', 30 March 1861, page 2). It is probable that this photograph documents that occasion. Source of descriptive information - Papers Past, file print, album page. The file print identifies the subjects as Lieut Charles Urquhart presenting a medal to Corporal Bowdler, with Edward McKenna on the left, but newspaper research identifies the group as Lt Colonel Young presenting medals to Crowder, Furlong and Greensmith. Inscriptions: Backing board verso - beneath image - Detachment 65th Regt Taranaki NZ; Album page - Parade on Mt Eliot (Puke Ariki Pa) Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Extensive view across a bay towards a beach and headland, with houses, barracks, a parade ground with redcoats drilling, the Red Ensign flag flying beside the largest house high on the hill to the left, the home of Colonel Cyprian Bridge. There are several small boats on the water. Nobby Island is on the left. Other buildings along the waterfront, from left, include barracks, in the centre the magazine of the 58th Regiment, a sentry box (set back from the waterfront), the hospital, the canteen and the officers' residence on the right The title on Bridge's pencil sketch (f-E-320-014) identifies his own house 'where I was quartered 3 years and a half, the parade ground, officers' houses and our pleasure boats in the foreground'. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - signature & 58; Recto - beneath image - Title Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 322 x 538 mm Provenance: The sketchbook was acquired by Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull in July 1893. Transfers: Removed from sketchbook E-320-f, along with C-018-020, an ink and wash version of the same view. Had been folded to fit in the sketchbook. Still in the sketchbook are Cyprian Bridge's "View of my house and cantonment at Wahapu" (p.14), probably the drawing copied by Williams; also on p. 12 and 13, 2 pencil and wash details of the same view, either by Bridge or Williams..
