Description: Flax and toitoi in the foreground, a group of Pakeha and Maori to the right, the Tuamarina Hotel with verandah and a shed in the middle ground, the Picton-Blenheim road with horse-drawn carriage, telegraph poles alongside and the hill with a monument where the Wairau Affray occurred in 1843 Liardet painted two copies of this scene. The Library holds an almost identical watercolour at C-030-017 Liardet was passing through Tuamarina to investigate iron sand deposits in the Nelson area when he painted this view. Quantity: 1 photograph(s) black & white. Physical Description: Photograph of watercolour 240 x 350 mm Provenance: Cowan left the painting with the Rutherford family at Canvastown and when their possessions were dispersed, an aunt of the owner bought the picture, said to be an "oil and watercolour with Indian Ink" [i.e. probably watercolour with Indian ink, possibly with gum arabic]. Description: View from Governor's Bay looking back towards Lyttelton, with various features marked, including Mount Pleasant, H. M. S. Fly in the harbour, the Custom house, Major Hornby's Hotel [Major Hornbrook's hotel, the Mitre Inn] , the Emigration Barracks, a public cook house, the store and the temporary office of the Union Bank, John Robert Godley's house and garden, the Land Office, the Police Office and the Town Hall, Market Place, Jail and Hospital, the [Canterbury] Association Store House, the Esplanade, settlers' huts, the church, parsonage and school house. Several people including an artist are seated on rocks to the left, by an arched rock. The others are a woman with a baby and another woman with two small children. The reversing of the artist's initials and the naivety of the drawing may indicate that this is a contemporary copy by another hand of the original Cridland sketch located at C-014-002-1. It does, however, have more features indicated in writing than the C-014-002-1 version. Other Titles - Lyttelton. The boat labelled 'FLY' is not an accurate depiction of the HMS Fly. See A-292-070 or C-033-003 for more accurate depictions. The volume had earlier belonged to W H Burnand. Transfers: Compare a very similar view with the same provenance located at C-014-002-1.

Description: Samuel Marsden behind a makeshift pulpit, with the Bible, preaching to a group of Maori and Europeans, with a bay behind him on the left, with canoes and a European ship (the Active), and on the right Rangihoua, a hilltop pa. The Maori chief Ruatara is standing in uniform to the right of Marsden and in the left foreground is Korokoro, dressed in the regimental uniform given him by Governor Maquarie of New South Wales.
