Description: A photograph of Miramar and three maps of the area used by Hector McLeod & Co for a promotional pamphlet. The photograph shows Miramar looking towards Seatoun Heights ca 1907 and was taken by Muir & McKinlay. The first map is of Miramar or Whataitai in Maori times and includes Maori place names, pa sites etc as well as a key to archaeological remains found in the area and whether they were human, oven or moa. The second is of land plots in Miramar. The third map is of the land to be reclaimed in Evans Bay with a table showing land valuations and a comparison of flat land in Miramar compared to other parts of the city. Description: 10 drawings of activities of the Fleming family for the year 1954. This card includes a pied stilt, a girl kayaking on the Waimeha Stream at Waikanae, the 'Phyllis' (a motor boat) stranded, with Kapiti Island behind it, a flax bush to the left, the family's holiday house at Waikanae, corner of Ngapaki and Rangihiroa Street, along with a map of Waikanae, the location marked, a pigeon 'the plague of Wadestown', whitebaiting (Charles Fleming managing a whitebaiting net), 'Paddy and topsy with the three girls', showing the three Fleming daughters on two horses, 'Mum and Skipper - busy resting', showing Peg Fleming with the family dog and 'Friday evenings' dinner' showing a large house with a board marked 'Country life - Open', and two large cabbage trees outside. Description: A Pakeha male and two Maori walking on a rocky beach with cliffs and low scrub to their right, looking towards Palliser Bay and Wellington in the distance. Both Maori are in cloaks and are carrying taiaha. This work was given the title Turakirae Head by Library staff, possibly in the 1950s, 60s or early 1970s. Close inspection in January 1996 revealed a previously unnoticed title. Cape Palliser is a considerable distance from Turakirae Head, although along the same stretch of coastline. Modern photographs confirm that the site is Cape Palliser, and that the topography as recorded by Brees is accurate. The only modern change is a (probably man-made) pool half-way between the high tide mark and the cliffs. A copy of modern photographs of the same scene is with the watercolour. On verso: section of a manuscript map of Pauatahanui and Porirua Harbour, presumably by Brees. Pauatahanui is called Pawai Tang[inui? - paper trimmed]. Other Titles - Turakirae Head, Palliser Bay coast ca 1843 Inscriptions: Recto - lower centre over a sandy patch between the foreground rock outcrop and the closest Maori and rocks; in brushpoint and very faint and illegible in parts: Cape Palliser towards the Wairarapa. 1844. Description: Buildings shown are the whaling station at Te Kopi, Palliser Bay. See similar view, with title, reproduced in McArthur's auction catalogue for sale 4 August 1987, lot 52. Shows a high rock, being climbed by three Pakeha men, on the right, a cluster of several low buildings near the shore and a path through low scrub in the foreground. A Maori woman [?] is walking away from the viewer and further along the path is a European man and another person. Date of 1844 is suggested because Brees' watercolour entitled Cape Palliser is dated 1844, and this view is likely to have been taken on the same exploratory trip.
