Description: The schedule of owners of land in the Wainui-o-mata District include some of the earliest settlers in Wellington region; among the owners in 1854 were William Swainson, William Fitzherbert and Edward Jerningham Wakefield. The main task of the road board was to push on with the road down the valley to the sea at Orongorongo, and the progress made during the 11 years was not particularly speedy, one of the reasons being that the settlers were not satisfied with the provisions of the provincial Road Act which provided for local taxing for local improvements and vested the administration in local boards Accompanying material - Includes newspaper cutting from Dominion 1937 re the donation of the Minute Book Quantity: 1 volume(s). Description: Copy of a topographic map of the Wellington region from Port Nicholson and Paliser Bay following the Ruamahanga River to the Manawatu River to the coast at Foxton. The Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges are named as are rivers, bays, heads, some settlements, tracks and roads. Some sections are marked and pa sites. Wakefield, Tiffin and Kettle have made descriptive notes about the terrain, views and navigable rivers on the map as well as at the bottom of it. Note on catalogue card states: Photocopy of col. MS map by W H Burnand inserted in his copy of New Zealand journal v. 4. p.218. 1843-44. Description: Shows small storehouse on two stout poles about 10 feet high, with a notched pole used as a ladder between them. Beneath the house are bags of food, and a Maori pounds stick on a block. Another stands at bottom of ladder. In the background two figures sit by a cooking pot outside a whare, and a dog roams in front of them. At right is a fence with carved posts. In centre foreground, cattle stand on a small rise with a tree fern, a cabbage tree, and flax. In the middle distance are the mouths of the Motueka river, at left, and the Moutere river at right. In the right distance are D'Urville Island, Stephen's Island, French Pass, and Croisilles Harbour, and in the left distance are Astrolabe Road, and Adele Island. Engraver said to be Thomas Allom.
