Description: Photographs of hydroelectric power plants on the Waikato River, at Ohakuri, Waipapa and Aratiatia. Other photographs show the permanent villages at Maraitai and Wairakei, and in particular the community halls built for those villages. The photographs were taken ca 1963 by a Ministry of Works staff photographer. Also included are photographs of Aratiatia power station taken by Rod Cook. Collection also includes aerial photographs of Auckland taken during World War II by an unknown photographer. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Some of these photographs were progress photographs to send to the Head Office Hydro Design in Wellington, but most were taken for a display of Government architectural design work. The Ministry of Works operational centre was at Mangakino, with later a construction group at Aratiatia. Rodney Cook was project architect at Mangakino and then Aratiatia from 1961 to 1964. Description: Reminiscences of the Bay of Islands, 1830s-1840s; letter from Fairburn's sister, Esther Hickson (1908); and extract on Hongi Hika from Carleton's life of Henry Williams. Records an early amputation of an infected leg carried out by William Williams, assisted by E T Fairburn, at Paihia, on a Mr Gray, a blacksmith, ca 1832. Mention of "first game of cricket in New Zealand" at Paihia, ca 1832 or 1833. Description: Shows the front of a small single-storey cottage with thatched roof and a verandah supported by five pillars. The cottage has two or three front windows and a front door, two chimneys and a lean-to, with a picket fence running from the house on both sides. A circular garden bed is in front and a cabbage tree, flax and another plant, possibly a fern, are to the right The Rev. Dr Robert Maunsell lived in this raupo cottage from 1838 to 1843. It was superseded by a 6-room wooden dwelling that burned down after three weeks' occupation. Maunsell and his wife were hosts to Governor Hobson in March 1842, with Chief Justice Martin, Abel Best and Edward Shortland also present. Dr Johnson was away from New Zealand between November 1844 and November 1846. He must have made this drawing from an earlier version or possibly initialled and dated it when he gave it to Mrs Hobson in England Other Titles - Maraetai Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - J.
