Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Most of the photographs relate to the remedial treatment camp set up in Rotorua. On the first page, the photographs are flanked by newspaper cuttings about another camp set up for the same purpose at Papakura, Auckland. The photographs on this page may relate to the Papakura camp. Most of the photographs are of groups of men doing various forms of excersise, and playing sport. There are group photographs of men in military uniform and others of groups posing with tennis raquets and medicine balls. Other photographs record the launch of "Bonds for Bombers" campaign in Rotorua, March 1942, and the ANZAC parade 1942 (also Rotorua). There are seven original cartoon drawings of military personnel by Stenberg. These were used in the Rotorua camp's newspaper. The photographs are supported by many newspaper cuttings about the camps and their purpose. There is a photograph relating to the camp newspaper "The Arawa Guerilla" and two copies of the paper are pasted onto the same page. Other newspaper cuttings and two programmes relate to a very successful entertainment developed by the men in the Rotorua camp. This was "Splitzkreig Army Review" which from September 1942 to March 1943 toured the upper North Island and raised 2,000 pounds for the Patriotic Fund. Remedial treatment camps were set up for men who had been judged by the military medical authorities as unfit for military service, but whoes ailments were considered curable. Examples of the sorts of conditions treated are knee problems, flat feet, \"underdevelopment,\" nervous conditions, and chronic backache. The Rotorua camp occupied Arawa Park, and the racecourse. Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Description: In part this album revolves around a family (of William Russell Morris) whose centre is the house at 9 Roscoe Terrace, Wadestown. It also revolves around one of the women in that household, Dorothy, who probably compiled the album. There are a number of women family members of different ages with whom (it would seem) she was close. There are also her colleagues at the Wellington Free Kindergarten, Taranaki Street, and the Newtown Kindergarten where she taught during the 1920s. A large part of this album is taken up with images of children, and by the end of the 1930s it looks as though Dorothy was an infant teacher at Marsden Collegiate School, Karori, Wellington, group photographs of pupils taken between 1933 and 1948. Holidays, and group outings sometimes involving picnics make up another large group of images. The only holiday outside New Zealand is to Fiji in 1920, and most of the images taken during this trip are of Indians and Indian events This is very much a woman's compilation. Men as a generalisation are few and far between and somewhat in the background when they appear. Thus it is also a good source of information on the clothing of women and children between 1920 and 1948 An envelope with four loose prints is inserted at the front of the album. Page 49 contains a newspaper cutting, showing a view of the tram stop at Moorhouse Street, Wadestown, with tram tracks and a tram, with bare fields on either side. Other - The school photograph at top left hand corner of page 39, is reproduced in the book "Marsden School" by Tosti Murray (1967), illustration no. 45. It identifies the class, the year, and all the pupils in the image. Other - The name C H Morris is taken from the Photo Archive Albums index, which says C H Morris was the photographer of three albums, and that he was a postmaster-general in the 1920s. There is no C H Morris listed in Wise's Post Office Directory, however William Russell Morris is listed as Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department; and listed as living at 9 Roscoe Terrace. Description: Photographs of deer carcasses being processed for export at Consolidated Traders Ltd's works at Rongatea and Rotorua. Also featured are carcasses of wild pigs awaiting processing and frozen goat carcasses bagged and ready for export. Several photographs show bales of deer pelts packed and covered with hessian. Deer photographed on Rex Giles' farm, Forest Park, at Maroa north of Taupo. Most of these photographs were in albums of plastic sleaves and were probably used as promotional material for the company. The prints were removed from the albums as the type of plastic bonds with the emusion of the print. Quantity: 54 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Anton Vogt was conceived in 1914 just before his parents returned to Norway from Argentina. His father, Volrath Vogt, had gone to Argentina as a young man of 20 in 1905. There, among other things, he worked as gaucho, herding cattle on the Pampas. In 1912 he married Margot Herlofsen, another Norwegian in Argentina, and in 1913 they had their first child, Sito, Anton's sister. Anton was born in Norway where his parents lived during World War I. His father worked as a business man supplying chemical products to the British Government. After the war the family moved to London where Volrath established what was at first a successful business in the boom of the immediate post war years. When the business failed he moved with his family to the Waterberg district, 200 miles north of Johannesburg in what is today Botswana. There during the early 1920s he managed a 200,000 acre cattle ranch on the edge of the Kalahari desert for a Norwegian consortium When this venture came to an end in 1926 the family came to New Zealand and ran a small shop at Bucklands Beach, Auckland. Anton and his sister worked at various jobs during their late teenage years and largely supported the family financially. In 1931 Anton got a job with the Western Electric Company and they sent him to Hamilton where he Lived for most of the 1930s. He then went to Wellington in the late 1930s still in the employment of Western Electric. In late 1938 Anton married his first wife, Rosalind Lees, and in 1939 entered training college. He Worked in broadcasting during the 1940s. Anton and Rosalind had six children Photographs in this album cover the period from childhood in Norway during the First World War to young parenthood in the late 1940s. It is rich in Norwegian relatives, African cattle ranches and family, friends and colleagues in New Zealand. There is also an interesting personal record of Erling Tambs, a Norwegian yachtsman who sailed from Oslo to Auckland in the "Teddy" ca 1931 Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples).
