Description: A panoramic view of the plains north of Christchurch (with a small section missing). From left to right is a large stand of native bush (possibly Papanui Bush), 'Hills at Waipara' in the distance, 'Wood ... near Kaiapoi' also at some distance, sandhills, a Maori kainga with a rough palisade and two raupo whares titled Waiti... (word cropped), three further small stands of bush, the hills of Banks Peninsula, a further small stand of bush and the foothills of the Southern Alps. In the section showing the hills of Bank's Peninsula, a European man is standing, holding a flag or something similar on a tall pole. Despite the title assigned to this panorama, Waipara is in the distance and the view is more likely to be taken from south of the Waimakariri River Inscriptions: Recto - Features given their Maori names across the bottom of each page with some names in English also included Quantity: 4 drawing(s). Description: 'From Te Kapa's kaik' on the left, drawn across the page, is a view across a valley towards hills, with the small buildings of the kaik or village in the foreground. Below that 'Te Morokuia' (or Te Morokina?) is a view of a distinctive low hill. On the upper right drawings of three items lost in Mantell's travels: 'Ye candle box [candlestick] wh[ich] was lost atte [at] Otaitai'. 'Ye nyfe [knife]... wh. was lost atte Orewa' and a third object, possibly another knife 'loste atte Godde nos wher' [lost at God knows where]. Bottom right is Mantell's group crossing the Waitaki River in a large canoe, with their Maori guides and their baggage, watched from the bank by a fifth man with his baggage. In the background at the river mouth is a small kainga, with at least one food storage platform. It is dated 3 October. Bottom left, 4 October, a night view in the camp with men seated around the fire, tents amongst flax bushes. Bottom right, a scene in a kainga, with a food storage platform to the right, a palisade, a rough hut and the boots and packs of the survey party outside. Description: View looking north along the beachline, with two food storage platforms and a low building to the right, a food bundle on a stick supported by a pyramid of logs, tents or raupo whare to the left and a European man standing, holding a flag, while a Maori woman crouches behind him, attending to cooking or holding a kete. The word Tipare is inscribed lower left. Mantell's party was close to Hakatere, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, or a little further south, on 7 October. The same kaik, probably Tarawata's, is also shown at E-334-052 and E-334-053 Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Oct 7. [Written across the top of the page, in ink.
