Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Contains miscellaneous lantern slides of New Zealand scenes, mostly dated ca 1907. Likely to have been photographed by Butcher. Landscapes include a hand-coloured slide of a Burton Brothers photograph of Lake Wakatipu from Kinlock, unidentified coastal towns and harbour views (one featuring an obelisk monument), rock formations, and river scenes (some bridges). Images of Wellington include the Provincial Council Building, view of Thorndon (Molesworth Street), and boats on the beach in Island Bay with Tapu Te Ranga Island in the background. Images of Napier include newly planted Norfolk Pine trees on Marine Parade and outer harbour wharf scene. Dunedin Botanic Gardens, hand coloured images of the interior of an unidentified fern houses, and a series of views of Mount Taranaki and the surrounding area are included. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Photograph albums entitled 'Views of New Zealand', containing Burton Bros photographs of New Zealand scenes, as well as views in Tonga and Samoa. These island views include one of Princess Anaziene (grand-daughter of King Tupou I of Tonga) outside the palace at Nukualofa; another taken near Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu; one of Neiafu (Vava'u, Tonga); and one in Apia, Samoa. Places in in the North Island of New Zealand include the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera Eruption of 1886; Mangarewa Gorge (named as Mongarewa Gorge in the album); Rotokanapanapa, Lake Rotomahana; and Waiwera with the Waiwera Hotel centre left. The South Island images show Lake Moke; Wet Jacket Arm; Passage Point Cove in Dusky Sound; and Cabbage Tree Grove (Halfway Bay, Lake Wakatipu) in which a log hut with thatched roof is seen behind a large flax bush, surrounded by cabbage trees.
