McIntosh album 11

Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Photographs, probably taken by G W Barltrop. Scenes in the first part of the album are of the South Island, mostly around the Dunedin area, and further south, in Invercargill and Bluff. There are two panoramas, one of Port Chalmers and one of Lumsden. Most are landscapes, but a few show groups of people, including five young girls in the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, and a man driving a horse and buggy at Manuka Creek, with two young women sitting beside him, and a third woman standing by the horse's head. A graveyard scene is a close-up view of two headstones, one for Catherine Louisa Schaw (widow of John S Schaw), who died in 1874 aged 71. North Island scenes show a church at Levin; and views of the countryside, a bullock pulling a laden cart, and at the Rimutaka Summit all taken on a train journey. Group portraits include one of a large family group, with two young boys in the foreground with a cricket bat and cricket pads; and two large groups of men and women associated with the Missions to Seamen. One image show a plaque erected `In memory of twelve officers and seamen who were drowned or died from exposure, by the wreck of the Barque Lizzie Bell near the Oeo River, July 24 1901, erected by members and friends of the Missions to seamen, Wellington, New Zealand'. Description: Photographs collected by Mrs Esther Ecclesfield for her daughter Esma Ecclesfield (i.e. Esther Mary Ecclesfield, later known as Esther Mary North, or Esma North). None of the people shown are identified. Several images show camping and views of bays on Waiheke island. Many of the photographs were taken in the Napier area, including several of a woman and two young girls with bicycles standing outside a house in Seaview terrace, Napier, and an interior view of the house; yachts; the Napier Arcade, with the Arcadia Tea-Rooms; children at a Napier beach; and a horse-drawn carriage travelling through water along the foreshore to Cape Kidnappers. Page 4 shows the original Otatara (Ashridge) homestead. Various views around Wellington include Lower Hutt, Belmont Road, Wilton's Bush, Breaker Bay, Muritai and Titahi Bay. In the South Island most of the views were taken around Dunedin, showing Tomahawk Beach, Lawyer's Head and "Cargill's Gates" at St. Clair. Inscriptions: Album page - `Esma. With love from Mother. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools.
