Searle album 2

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). There are also an old photograph of W Stack's Hotel in Hastings with men and horses outside (in poor condition); a woman in what may be a 1930 Chrysler Plymouth with another snow away from the tyres; the gravestone of Julius von Haast; Queen's Wharf, Wellington showing a recently returned troop transport ship; an orchestra performing at the 1907 Christchurch exhibition; men of the No. 19 Platoon with a car at the summit of the Rimutakas; postcard from P B Davis to Mr A French showing a group of First World War soldiers with the message that they are about to leave for France; and six children at the base of a large Maori carving with a bell attached at Ohinemutu. Description: Photographs taken in Far North District, circa 1939, possibly by Ethel Pearson who was a school teacher at Herekino School at this time. Four images show: four unidentified Maori children on Ninety Mile Beach, Tangi Heke (descendant of Hone Heke) wearing a pinafore; a man called Joe, who is riding a horse, and his bullock team; and hot pools and Maori whare at Ngawha Springs. Photos are all annotated on the rear by Pearson. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Ethel Pearson worked at Herekino School on her first teaching assignment. Description: Photographs of large groups of people taken on tours run by New Zealand Railways, using rail and road transport. The album covers various trips taken by large groups of unidentified people, mostly in the North Island, and only as far south as Tokaanu and the Whanganui River. They travelled by rail, by road and by ferry. Very few of the photographs have captions, but several are labelled "Commerce trip", and include images of farming, ploughing, stock sales yards, and a large group of men picnicking around a hangi (p. 14). A Maori man in the foreground is clad in a European shirt and Maori skirt and is smoking a pipe and there are several other people in the foreground. To the right of a path is a swampy area with fern or bracken and mangroves. Probably Tamati Waka Nene's pa at Okaihou. Description: A photographic scrapbook album relating to the Simpson family containing images taken between circa 1885 and circa 1989 by a range of photographers. Also contains family memorabilia. Images and items are captioned, probably in the hand of Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson (née O'Shea). The cover bears an annotated note 'Graingers - Mel & Win, Young Alan, Pop O'Shea - Bebe & Joy, wedding ph., Ngatoki, Rangitoto, mish-mash of family'. The album appears to have been created by Cecilia Mary for her son Shane Simpson, and contains sets of images relating to Shane's paternal and maternal lines. The first set of images relates to the family of Gordon Alan Simpson, and mainly shows his parents Montague Melrose (Mel) Simpson and Winifred (Win) Bertha Evelyn (née Grainger). Other images of notes include: the Grainger family outside their home 'The Hermitage' at Norfolk street, Ponsonby, Auckland; Mel and Win on their honeymoon; Mel in army uniform during World War One; 'Highbury' the Hammond family home in Birkenhead; family holidays in caravans and tents; and family group portraits of Mel and Win with Gordon Alan and his siblings Keith John, Tracey, Roy. Includes Win's Post Office savings book dated 1915. One set of images relates to Gordon Alan Simpson as he grew up, and shows him as a child and young man. Images of note include: Gordon Alan in Wadestown Primary school class portraits for 1930 and 1933; secondary school class portraits; Gordon Alan in the Wairapapa College pipe band; street portraits of Gordon Alan and Mel Simpson, and Gordon Alan with friend Frank Beaufort; the Castor Bay home; formal family portraits of Gordon Alan with his parents and siblings. One set of images relates to Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson and shows her as a child and young woman. Images of note include: family portraits of Bebe with her O'Shea family members at the Apirana Avenue house, notably her grandparents, parents Michael David O'Shea and Bridget Martha (nee Langton), and cousins Win Langton, Sue Langton, Maura Reidy; other family members including Peter Langton, Joy, and Uncle Dan; Bebe as a child holding a kiwi bird; and Bebe as a young woman on holiday, Bebe with Ron W Walker, and Bebe in her debutante dress in 1945. One set of images shows the wedding of Cecilia Mary (Bebe) and Gordon Alan in 1949, their honeymoon, and holiday scenes taken in their early married life. Includes their wedding invitation. One set of images relates to Shane Simpson, and shows him from baby to boyhood. Images of note include: informal snapshots of Shane with his parents and grandparents, family holidays at baches, Oakura, and Cape Reinga, Shane's first birthday, Christmas at their Wellsford home, baby Shane with crayfish and in a highchair, and Shane at play and at a childrens' costume party; formal portraits of Shane; Shane and his parents on a trip to England 1957-1958; and class portraits showing Shane as the only Pakeha child at a Maori School, and at Hobsonville School in 1960. Some images interspersed through the sets relate to the teaching career of Gordon Alan Simpson and Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson in the far north: Gordon Alan and pupils at his sole charge school at Hakaru, Shane holding a sporting shield sitting below lines of Maori pupils holding a school banner display 'FNCS' and Far Northland place names, a group portrait showing Gordon Alan Simpson, John Bates, Tony Erstitch, Alan Karena, Peta Riki, B Bates, Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson, and R Karena. Includes images related to their rural teaching posts; Te Kao school and houses in 1957, Punaruku school in 1989 (originally lived there in 1951), and the school teacher's house at Ngatoki [circa 1989]. Additional images at the back of the scrapbook show: the wedding of Harold Simpson, brother of Melrose; a family portrait of Montague Melrose (Mel) Simpson with his siblings and his parents John McDougall Simpson and Catherine Simpson, a carte de visite of baby Montague Melrose (Mel) Simpson, Peter Langton in his 90s in 1924, an O'Shea family wedding portrait, and Bebe Simpson in a eclass portrait St Joseph's Whangarei 1932, in a childrens' costume tableau, and with a baby in 1989. Includes scenic photographic postcards of Hot Springs Hotel Waiwera, Franz Josef and the Hermitage 1936, view of the glacier from St James Anglican church window, and the lounge of the MV 'Rangitoto' passenger ship; and two newspaper clippings. Arrangement: Images within the album are arranged in themetical sets, with individual images arranged in broadly chronological order within each set. Processing information: As some photographs and ephemera were loose in the album, each album page has been numbered, and the loose items have been annotated with the number of the page at which they were found.
