Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Description: Published by A. H. and A. W. Reed, Dunedin, 1934. Contains a preface by James Cowan. Loose material laid in to the volume comprises: a newspaper clipping about the Tarawera eruption; a postcard of the Mission Church, Wairoa, before the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a painting of the Mount Tarawera eruption mounted on card which has a cartoon pasted on the back called 'Native auction' that shows a group of Māori people auctioning off missionaries' bones while standing on a platform in front of what looks like a pātaka (food store); a photograph of Rewiri, sitting in front of a small hut covered in mud and ash after the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a sketch by S. Percy Smith of Puwai Island (Lake Rotomahana) dated 1858; and a typescript of an annotated draft article titled 'Manx Memories: The mermaid's 400' dated Oct 1941 by Cowan, relating to the migration of his mother's father James Qualtrough, from the Isle of Man to New Zealand, in the 1850s. The photograph of Rewiri is taken by the Burton Brothers at Te Wairoa, 1886, and is wrongly attributed as being a photograph of 'Tuhoto the tohunga' on an inscription on the back. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
