Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Description: Views of annexation ceremonies, of the local people and their leaders, of Lord Ranfurly and his party which included Naval personel from the Mildura who added presence to the occasions and raised flags during the ceremonies. There are photographs of two lepers on Molokani Island in the Penryn group and the Governor on a pearl shell diving boat on Manihiki. On the way back to New Zealand the Mildura stoped at the Kermadec Islands. Photographs were taken of Sunday (Raoul) and Macaulay Islands, and of the crater on Curtis Island. This part of the album ends with the Mildura in Lyttelton Harbour and the Governor coming ashore in a boat. Most of the rest are scenic shots of the Tourist highlights of New Zealand. There are three photographs of women crossing the Tasman Glacier and boiling a billy. The album ends with a group of photographs of the Channel Islands According to a note at the front of the album, all photographs, other than the New Zealand scenic tourist shots, were taken either by Captain Baynes or P M May, Surgeon, both of HMS Mildura. However, this is one of several albums recording the annexation of the Cook Islands held in the Photograph Archive. Many of the same images occur in all of them and a large number of these came from negatives held in the Malcolm Ross Collection. Malcolm Ross was a New Zealand Journalist who as the correspondent for the Times news paper, accompanied Lord Ranfurly's party on the Mildura, and was responsible for photographing the occasion. It was selected with some other items in July 1935 by Dr Scholefield, New Zealand Parliamentary Librarian, during a visit to Hampton Court Palace where Isabel Baynes lived. From 1935 to 1998 the album was housed in the New Zealand Parliamentary Library.

Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
