Description: Central third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows groups of figures on foreshore including man on horseback, man examining ships through spyglass, two small groups of Maori watching, two men smoking long pipes, 14 sailing ships including one rounding Point Halswell, Somes Island with flag flying at its southern end, two Maori craft including one with sails. View extends from Warepori's Village in Pitone at left, to Mount Victoria at right. Features named are: Warepori's village Pitone, Valley of the Hutt, Tararua Mountains, Somes's Island, Pt Halswell (the entrance from the sea), Pt Jerningham, Mr Duppa's house (Oriental Bay), Mount Victoria. There are colour transparencies available (photographed from better copies of this work, in volume of Wakefield's book). Description: Shows close view of troops on the bank of the river preparing to cross: some loading dinghy at left, a group sitting smoking pipes centre left, a cannon and packhorses waiting to go. Further off are wagons, more soldiers, two sailing ships and several dinghies crossing the river towards the left bank in left distance. At right background rises the high ground of the right bank, and in central distance the camp on the cliff top. Verso contains pencilled diary notes for 14, 15, 16 March 1865: packed up tents and marched to Manutahi Pa but no sign of life there and they took peaceful possession, looting wharies and getting a few pigeon spears, mats and plenty of potatoes - went out and shot a pig and stabbed another - next day shot another pig with revolver. On 16 March, got up early and went to stock yards where a "most troublesome little black cow" was chosen - she ran and "butted everything including a poor gun horse who got in the way - however she was soon lashed up to a gun, and yielded good milk for breakfast". Description: Shows Von Tempsky, smoking a pipe and seated by the cartwheel in the foreground, with Dr I. E. Featherston standing behind him. Sergeant Birchfield may be the standing soldier on the left, guarding the group. Seated are Maori guide Te Mahuki and his wife Takeroa (Lucy). There is a horse standing by the cart on the right. There is a billy boiling on a campfire in the centre of the group of figures. The group is in the foreground looking out over an encampment at the right in mid-distance, with troops moving on lower further hills, and in the distance a hilltop fort or pa, with a flag flying. There is a cabbage tree in the left foreground. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
