Lantern slides of gardens in New Zealand, England, and unidentified locations

Description: Lantern slides of gardens and related subjects taken ca 1930s-1950s. Five slides are labelled as being taken by William Williams in Christchurch during the 1930s, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Views of various gardens, flower beds, and trees. Also associated buildings and garden features including steps, ornamental borders, ponds, large pools, streams, bridges, pathways, the rock garden at Windlesham Moor, and a band rotunda. - Four images of Abbotsford Park in Gloucestershire, England. - Six images of gardens in Christchurch taken by William Williams between 1933 and 1937 (with labels giving the addresses). Another image shows the greenhouse at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. - Aerial views of two extensive formal gardens. One image shows gardens around a castle with moat, possibly in Holland. - Delphinium trial garden bed with sign, identifying it as held by "R H S" [Royal Horticultural Society?] and the British Delphinium Society. - Eleven images appear to be from commercial series. Nine feature drawings relating to garden design; the others show water lilies and a circular floral 'clock'. - Another series show plant portraits in garden settings, including at Windsor Great Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. These images are numbered and may be from a commercial set. - Also contains an image of an unidentified man [gardener?] carrying baskets on a pole. Description: Photographs relating to military activities, made for publication in the New Zealand Free Lance. Includes a series of photographs of the State Forest Air Patrol, Royal New Zealand Air Force, in 1947, and photographs of Captain J Forsyth at the Polish Army League premises in Palmerston North. Also includes photographs of soldiers, guns, Fort Ballance, Kallang Civil Airport at Singapore in 1950 and the helmet plate of the New Zealand Regular Force of 1880 to 1911. Description: Album compiled in the late 1850s and early 1860s by James Coutts Crawford (1817-1889). The photographs fall into distinct groups, interspersed through the album, as follows: Portraits of the Dundas and Moreton families, and scenes in Anverara, Dalmally, Overton and other localities in Scotland, as well as views of Barton Court, Tortworth Court (Gloucestershire) and Kintbury (Berkshire) in England. These photographs were probably taken during Crawford's residence in England during the 1850s. Photographs of the Crawford, Clifford, Weld and Levin families in Wellington, and views around Molesworth, Mulgrave and Hobson Streets, taken in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The photographer is unknown, but possibly Crawford himself. Views of Wellington from the Terrace, taken in 1858 by the Reverend Arthur Stock (1823-1901). Views of Ngauranga Gorge taken on 22 March 1859 by Matthew Fortescue Moresby, paymaster of HMS Iris. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
