Description: Photographs relating to the Quartermain family, none of which have captions. None of the people or places are named. Of interest are a number of views of the ruins of a house, with only the chimneys standing; several of the new St John's Church, Hororata, including laying the foundations, building construction, and the completed church with lychgate; one of the tombstones of Sir John Hall, and his wife, with the new St John's Church partially visible in the background (for which Sir John Hall bequeathed the money); and one photograph of a steam tractor fording a river with difficulty, with a tow-rope leading to three laden wagons on the far side of the river. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod. Views include groups of mountaineers; routes traversed in the mountains; the building of mountain huts; deer stalking; the difficulties of fording flooded rivers; traversing glaciers; camping in the mountains; and life enjoyed by mountaineers. Particular sequences include views of the source of the Rakaia River at the terminal face of the Ramsay Glacier; the first ascent of jacob Glacier and the second ascent of Mount Butler by ian Powell and Jim Nichols; the first ascent and traverse of Mount Whitcombe by Boney Chester, Allan Willis and Bill Mirams (28/12/1931); the first ascent of the Snow Dome by Jack Hayes, Cedric Turner and A Anderson; record of pioneer work in the Wanganui-Rangitata-Rakaia watershed by Dr E Teichelmann with guides A Graham and J Clark (in 1911); and the first traverse of Malcolm Peak by Jack Hayes and Cedric Turner in February 1934. Description: Photographs of the Wellington area in the North Island, and in the South Island views particularly of Lake Guyon and surrounds, the Mount Travers Station, and the Waiau River and bridge, taken by William Thomas Locke Travers. The Wellington views include several of the `Nghauranga' [i.e. Ngauranga] Valley, including one of two wagons laden with timber crossing a wooden bridge; one of a small group of buildings at the foot of the gorge; and one of a bend in the road, a man seated on a log in the foreground, and smoke coming from the chimney of a house partially hidden to the right. All the other scenes in the Wellington area are in the Hutt Valley, or Belmont Hills, including `Fitzherbert's' (the home of Sir William Fitzherbert?). The view of the Mount Travers Station on the edge of Lake Guyon shows a building partially hidden by trees on the left, a woman and child sitting in front of a camera on a tripod, and a man sitting in a dinghy on the edge of the lake. A number of scenes are in the Lake Guyon area, with various streams and creeks; and views of the Waiau River into which the lake drains. Inscriptions: Album page - `H.N. Murray, Motueka. His book'. Description: Largly New Zealand material and photographs of paintings of the war in the Pacific by Allan Barclay Barns-Graham (official war artist) and Oliver Arthur Gillespie. New Zealand material includes views of coastal defences, military training at various camps, prisoner of war camps, Home Guard, public military parades, sports, army personnel including portraits, guns, tanks and other weapons, repatriated soldiers, medical units, ministerial visits, the posthumous investiture of Lt Ngarimu with the V.C., and mechanical transport. Arrangement: This collection is made up of empty negative envelopes with captions some of which have file prints attached to them, and sheets of contact prints which are also captioned. All of the negative envelopes have the relevant negative numbers written written on them. They were scattered throughout the wax boxes in which the War History collection had been housed for the last eight years. In giving the collection a general order they have been sorted into their series groups. This collection contains material which has been called the "35mm" series. They have not been arranged in numerical sequence as yet (though some might be so arranged). Any negatives will be found in the 35mm registers at 16398 - 16509. (Feb 1995)
