Description: The essay details the lives of the Morriss family who have their origins in 1750 in Barnack, Northamptonshire; they crossed the border to Lincolnshire about 1806, mainly into the parishes of Holbeach and Gedney. In 1854 James Morriss and family emigrated to South Australia, settling near Adelaide. The majority of the family remained in Australia. John Frederick Morriss and his brother George Ackland Morriss came to New Zealand in 1901 on the Belimba. Describes working life on ships before joining the Otahuhu workshops. Talks about union activities at the workshops and how he became General Secretary of the Railway Tradesmen's Association. Recalls introduction of Amenity Blocks. Discusses progression through the union ranks and the role of the RTA; compulsory unionism; branch relationship with union executive; Catholic Action Group at Otahuhu workshops to counter communist influence; Muldoon electioneering in Otahuhu workshops; strength of apprentices during World War II; 1952 Railway strike; working conditions in the Railways during the late 1950s and 1960s and reaction of RTA to new technology. Description: Colourful poster has a perpetual calendar in the centre, and is surrounded by advertisements for local businesses of Pukekohe, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Otahuhu and Papakura. Above the calendar panel is a circular head and shoulders portrait of a clean-shaven Maori chief with facial moko; he is flanked by illustrations of the Scottish thistle and the English rose. Immediately above the calendar is a line of three-leafed clovers, and other illustrations included a boy and girl scout, and two illustrations of a taiaha and long-handled tewhatewha together.
