Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Coloured photographs inserted under plastic; probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell. Most of the images show plants, many of them flowering, including natives such as cabbage trees, karaka berries, kowhai flowers, manuka, and kauri gum on a young kauri. Other plants include red currants, water lilies, wild chicory, lasiandra (or tibouchina), gourds, sedum, scarlet nerines, ginkgo trees, dogwood, fuchsias, passionfruit, wych elms and maple trees. One photograph shows the Penn family (Michael and Helen Peen, with their children James and Sally) taken at Hamilton in 1977; and several show Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford), at her home in Cambridge, NZ. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'. Description: Shows rocky outcrop Pohaturoa near Atiamuri with the Waikato River between steep cliffs. In the foreground are three houses and carriage drawn by four horses on a road leading from a bridge across the river on the right. Probably the original for the engraving published in New Zealand: graphic and descriptive... London: Sampson Low,... 1877 pg 19. Inscribed with the title "Pohaturoa". The accompanying text reads "Pohaturoa, or the Great Rock...which rises 650 feet abruptly from the plain in the banks of the Waikato near Niho-o-te Keore, is a celebrated pa of the Ngatiraukawa tribe." A very similar watercolour of the same scene with minor foreground differences with the title "Pohuturoa near Atiamuri, 1875" was sold at McArthur's Auction, 10 May 1985, Lot 28.
