Refers to Prime Minister John Key's announcement on 18 February 2013 that after the April 2013 withdrawal from Bamiyan, New Zealand would maintain 27 military personnel in Afghanistan for at least a year. Description: In October the Prime Minister, John Key, and the news media announced, 'denied', and discussed a plan to send the SAS back to Afghanistan shortly to launch a revenge attack on the Taleban insurgents, for the death of several New Zealand soldiers. The general announcement to the world (and to the Taleban) of a 'surprise attack' was made seriously in October 2012. Contrary to appearances, this was 'not a joke'. The first man says 'The SAS is coming back from Afghanistan to help out at next year's Rugby World Cup!' and the second man reading an article headed 'Boks arrive to extend All Blacks battering' wonders if there is any chance they could be back next Saturday?' The little Evans man says 'Burger Botha and the beast!' Context: On 4th May 2010 Prime Minister John Key said 'Security around next year's Rugby World Cup could limit the Government's ability to keep elite troops in Afghanistan'. The Springboks secured the season crown for the 2009 Tri-Nations series in their final match on 12 September, defeating the defending series champion All Blacks 32-29 in Hamilton; in fact the All Blacks lost all three of their games against the Springboks. Description: Ten interviews with Māori who served in the Vietnam War. The interviewees were born between 1935 and 1949, and belong to iwi from rohe across Aotearoa/New Zealand. Includes interviews with Paul Kimiora Carr, Roy Tutewhakaiho Matakatia Komene, Roger Carew Aritaku Maaka, John Edwin Heremaia Marsh, William (George) Mathew, Anthony (Andy) Leon Mokaraka, Albert Sidney (Sid) Puia, Rangi Mathew Rata, James (Jim) Taia, and Charles Romi (Bunny) Tumai. Includes printed biographical forms, printed abstracts, printed pre-interview questionnaires, digital recordings, photographs, and other documentation. Awards/funding - Funded by an Award in Oral History from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2006. Between June 1964 and December 1972 around 3,500 New Zealand military personnel served in South Vietnam. All of the New Zealanders who served were regulars or had enlisted in the Regular Force to join V Force - New Zealand's army contingent in the US-led coalition. Māori participation in the war was substantial. The interviewees served with many of the New Zealand units deployed in Vietnam; some served with Australian units. Description: Charles Riley was born in Tower Hamlets, London, in 1893. Describes coming to New Zealand on the SS TAINUI (ship) in 1913; serving with 3rd Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards during World War I; being present at First Battle of Ypres. Recalls the burning of the Cloth Hall at Ypres and describes in detail life in the trenches, gas attacks and fighting on the St Julien Sector; being injured and returned to New Zealand where he joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and served in Palestine. Discusses taking a government bursary after the war to study structural engineering at Canterbury University; failing exams and becoming an engineering draughtsman; joining the New Zealand Railways; becoming involved with the Labour Movement; being made redundant in 1930; heavy involvement in organising the unemployed in Christchurch. Describes activities, food depots and illegal meetings in Victoria Square; convictions and prison term; recalls other labour and unemployed workers leaders; leaving for Australia and working as a miner at Cobar and Tennants Creek. Talks about leaving to enlist with the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War; describes Darwin in the 1930s; working passage to London as a fireman on a freighter; describes in detail process of joining Brigade in Paris; travelling to Spain; enlistment in 35th Division of Brigade; other New Zealanders in Brigade; training; experiences of fighting at Teruel and Brunete; crossing the Ebro River at Tortosa; being wounded and repatriated to London; organisation of Brigade; rank of shock brigadier and company commissar; Brigade weapons and tactics; the Spanish troops; withdrawal of Brigade from Spain; return to Australia; suspicion of New Zealand and Australian governments to returning International Brigade members.
