Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Recalls his childhood in Gisborne; the Tarawera eruption and his mother's death from tuberculosis on the night of the eruption, the possibility of a visit of Te Kooti to Gisborne; attending Napier High School and memories of Te Aute; his study of Greek and Latin and playing cricket and rugby. Discusses attending St John's College, Auckland and pranks played. Describes walking from Napier to Wellington. Comments on the bush around Norsewood and Woodville and Napier before the earthquake. Recalls listening to William Colenso's sermons, and boyhood friendship with Percy Spiller. Describes Samuel and Leonard Williams. Recalls his early interest in Melanesia. Describes time as a headmaster on San Cristobal and experiences with local headhunters. Comments on this practice in relation to weapons supplied by the British. Describes dressing as a Melanesian while living in the islands and preaching sermons in eight languages. Talks about his compilation of a language dictionary and publication of a book on the area. Description: Langdon's book, The Lost Caravel, was published in June 1975 by Pacific Publications. The book puts forward the theory that the crew of a Spanish ship, the caravel San Lesmes, lost in the eastern South Pacific in 1526, played a prominent role in the prehistory of several Polynesian Islands including the Tuamotu Archipelago, Society Islands, Austral Islands, Easter Island and New Zealand. The San Lesmes was one of the ships of the expedition of Garcia Jofre de Loaia. The Lost Caravel Re-explored gathers his evidence in support of the presence of European castaways in the pre-Cook Pacific. Description: Material extracted by Robert McNab from New Zealand material in French archives (including the archives of the Ministere de la Marine) concerning Lavaud and his vessel l'Aube Contains significant parts of two essays written by Lavaud, commandant of L'Aube. These essays describe the attempts of colonisation of the South Island of New Zealand by the French, principally in Akaroa. Some passages try to rehabilitate Baron de Thierry. Contains various letters, most of them to Lavaud, among are which letters from Bishop Pompallier about Wallis and Futuna, letters from William Hobson and letters from C B Robinson (postmaster at Akaroa).
