Description: Redcoats and Maori in the foreground amongst low scrub, including flax and toetoe. A cleared hill (right) and bush-clad hill in the background.To the left in the middle distance can be seen the palisades of Kapotai Pa, alongside a stream at Waikare Inlet (Bay of Islands) surrounded by soldiers with smoke and flames visible. To the right is a small European house, with a fenced garden, with soldiers in formation in front of it, ordnance, and further soldiers moving up the hill behind it, with puffs of gunfire smoke coming from the hill. Other Titles - Kapotai Pa Inscriptions: No inscriptions on work. Title taken from mat, now discarded. Other mats (from box A-079) which have been retained show a title in ink in the hand of Cyprian Bridge. The mat must also have included the artist's signature, since the catalogue card (from the 1960s?) states that the work is signed and includes square brackets around the date, but not around the title. Description: A family playing on a beach. Five children are making a sandcastle in the foreground, while their mother and a sixth child rest under a parasol to the right at the base of a hill. At the top of the hill, cannon are visible, along with a lighthouse, and a steamship and a yacht can be seen in the water in the background. The scene has been previously identified as the Waitemata Harbour; however Ashton was an Australian artist so the area depicted could be Australian, or it could be an imaginary scene, relating to either Australia or New Zealand. Description: Shows an unidentified woman standing beside a Kinman cannon (made in 1808) on display at the Britomart Reserve, Akaroa. A plaque on the cannon says 'Ordance gun from the HMS Britomart which arrived at Akaroa 10 August 1840'. Wooden colonial period building and bare tree visible in background. Photograph taken by the Steffano Webb Photographic Studio, Christchurch. Source of additional descriptive information - Location provided by Library client. Information on cannon provided by the Akaroa Civic Trust (see website www.akaroacivictrust.co.nz 7 September 2012) Cannon placed on Britomart Reserve in 1908 and described as being from the HMS Britomart, a British naval vessel which came to Akaroa in 1840 to demonstrate British sovereignity over the South Island. The 1808 Kinman cannon had been sent out by the British Admiralty for display at the 1906-1907 International Exhbition held in Christchurch. The cannon had ben requested by Akaroa Mayor Etienne Le Lievre. After the closure of the Exhibition, the cannon was sent to Akaroa. It is the same type of cannon that would have been on the HMS Britomart, but is not from the Britomart itself. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative. Description: View along the shoreline looking east, towards Parnell, with the military buildings the skyline above the cliff. Sail boats in the harbour, and a wharf in the right foreground with a yacht, crewed by several men. Other men and a woman with two children are on the wharf. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: either 'Fort Britomart, Auckland, 3 August 1864' in the Hocken Library, p. 35 in the now dismantled Williams' sketchbook, with minor changes in some details, especially the lettering on the sail of the yacht; or the Turnbull's watercolour 'Fort Britomart from Queen Street Wharf August 64' (E-510-010/011), which varies the figures on the wharf and does not include lettering on the yacht's sail.
