Description: Interior view of Kawiti's Pa at Ruapekapeka includes his house and pallisade, and several unnamed houses. Two wells are labelled, while the ditches, embankments and gateways are not. A reference key identifies the areas destroyed by artillery as well as the positions of the flagstaff. Four diagrams surround the plan: elevation of palisades; bomb proof hole; section of a hut and an underground passage and cave. A larger diagram shows a cross-section view of the pa showing the position of the breach and underground bomb proof chambers. Compare to lithograph held in Drawings and Prints E-320-f-003 and MapColl-832.11hkm/1846/Acc.29011. Map has manuscript annotations. On the rear of the map is handwritten "Captured under Sir George Grey Govenor, January 11th 1846, 12 English killed and 30 wounded. These letters describe Hamilton's experiences as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy, including comments on the fighting in the Bay of Islands, his opinions on the state of New Zealand and news of FitzRoy being recalled in late 1845. Folder two contains; a letter from Charles Clifford dated 25 Aug 1845 to Col Richmond answering questions about the treatment of flax and possible production of flax products, specifically canvas for wool bales; several letters from FitzRoy, one incomplete and undated, to Hamilton, dated 29 July 1846, 12 and 13 Sept 1847 giving news of FitzRoy's activities and comments on Hamilton's career including advice on an opening on the survey vessel the `Acheron' and a letter from Henry John Tancred to Hamilton dated 25 Sept 1871 dealing with local and national politics and economic matters and passing on news of University developments. Description: Most of the reminiscences describe life at Whangarei where her husband was mainly engaged in the flax industry. He also spent some time mining and working as a builder at Thames. Elizabeth recalls Hone Heke's sacking of Kororakea in 1845 and subsequent evacuation of Whangarei settlers to Auckland. The Holmans eventually returned to Whangarei where Henry operated a flax mill until the family moved to the Thames goldfields in 1867. A revival of the flax industry saw them once again return to Whangarei. They retired to Auckland where Henry died in 1894 Relationship complexity - Holograph with ms annotations at MS-Papers-3881 Mrs Holman first came out to Hokianga in 1840. In 1841 she married Henry Charles Holman at Kororareka, and they spent some time at the Bay of Islands, and in Auckland where Henry was appointed Superintendent of Public Works. Description: Plan of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaeawai in the Far North District, Northland shows sites of the flagstaff, Kawiti's house, houses underground, heaps of potatoes and indian corn, pits underground covered with plants and earth, Nos. 1 & 2 - nine pounder guns, No. 3 - six pounder cannonade, c&d - points of attack, a&b - sections taken, are referred to in a key. Doors in the outer fence are marked and the principal place of egress and congress. Positions and distances of a camp and batteries around the pa are marked, also numbers of soldiers. Names include Major Bridge, Lt. Phillpotts, Major McPherson, Lt. Col. Hulme. A sketch on the left of the map is of the pallisade. Notes refer to the inner and outer pallisade with detailed information about the heights and thicknesses of the posts. The sketch on the right of the map is of a Maori wearing a cape, who appears to be using a blow pipe which projects through a section of the front face of the pallisade.
