Description: Album of South Island scenes (except for a few taken en route to Wellington showing The Brothers, Pencarrow Head, and one of a group having a picnic at Muritai). Probably mostly photographed by George William Barltrop. The first section shows the Nelson and Marlborough areas, and several photographs of ships at sea, one shipwreck (the Antiocco Accame in 1901), and one aground (the Elginshire, 1902). People who are identified are: the Reverend Bennett (Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with his first wife Hana Te Unuhi Mere Bennett, and young daughter, Rawinia Bennett (circa 1900); Abe Wells, photographed as an older man outside his cob house at Richmond (circa 1890s); and Isla Reid, photographed as a young girl, probably in the Dunedin area. Three scenes in cemeteries have clearly identified headstones, and include those for the Reverend Samuel Poole, Frank Churchill Simmons; and a group memorial for Charlotte McDonald, Annie McQuaid and Lizzie Crinrod, stewardesses who were drowned in the wreck of the SS Wairarapa, Great Barrier Island, 29th October 1894. Description: Reminiscences written in 1910 of Mieville's life in New Zealand, mainly on Glenham Station in the Mataura Valley, Southland, and in Dunedin; transcribed and indexed by Marsha Donaldson. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted. Left, below that, Taiaroa standing on the beach, staff in hand, appearing to be speaking, observed by several people lying down. The title refers to Rauparaha's conquest of the east coast and to the local paramount chief's defiance while Rauparaha is safely in the North Island on Kapiti. Below on the right, three drawings of the same man's head in a bonnet, and a right-angles, a coastal view looking north along the beach from Onekakara, Moeraki, with several canoes pulled up on shore to the left. Description: Contains correspondence (Matiaha Tiramorehu) about various issues including Maori political participation in central government and admission to the Upper House, the Governments complaints of the high price of Maori land for Native schooling and other purposes and the excessive costs imposed on Maori for their childrens attendence. Also includes letters by Tamihana Te Rauparaha about an ongoing dispute between Ngati Raukawa and Muaupoko and Ngati Apa incursions into the Horowhenua burning houses (21/4/1870) and challenging Ngati Raukawa occupation in the district. Tamihana requests the government to confiscate the arms that were formerly issued to these tribes during the wars. Also mentions a curse by Te Peeti (?) threatening to exhume the bones of Te Whatanui and throw them into lake Horowhenua. Also contains a copy of the petition by Hohepa Tamaihengia requesting the return of Whitireia. Contains good examples of 19th century Kai Tahu dialect by Matiaha Tiramorehu ! Quantity: 1 folder(s).
