Description: Lists recordings of Maori performers on Columbia and Parlophone labels. All the recordings were released between 1927 and 1930. Performers included: Mere Amohau, Te Mauri Meihana, Tiawhi Ratete, Rotohiko Haupapa, Rotorua Maori Male Quartet[te], the Rotorua Maori Choir, Ana Hato & Deane Waretini, and the Tahiwis. There are portraits of the Rotorua Maori Choir, Ana Hato and Deane Waretini, and the Tahiwis. There is also a photograph of "Tunohopu" the meeting house in Rotorua where the Columbia recordings were made. Quantity: 1 booklet of 8 pages.. George H Davies - Papers relating to Maori legends, waiata and other matters

Description: Contains a 6-page notebook of songs and chants with a note at the beginning by S P Smith saying `sent to me by G H Davies, Karore April, 1911'. In Maori the notebook includes notes on Kaioraora (cursing songs) by Topeora, and a waiata `E pa to hau ke Te Wairau e'. Inside the back cover is a copy of a letter in Maori from S P Smith to Whatahoro, New Plymouth 29 August 1911. Several pages relating to legend, waiata and other matters in several hands. Legends include Mataora, Tumatauenga and Kongomaraeroa; Tura and Whiro; Tamatea and the moa; Mataoho; Maui; Tane and others. Some of this material may be from a Ngati Porou source; One section is headed `Waiata a Te Whatu', and there are various waiata among the text which Davies claims have been sung before the Maori Land Court in the Hawkes Bay area. There is also an explanation in Maori and English of the expression `Ariki tapairu' signed by Rawiri Te Rangi Rangikauri. A covering letter from Davies to S P Smith, dated 18 Jul 1902, offering them to the Polynesian Society for publication. There is also an undated note from Elsdon Best to Smith forwarding a letter from Tamahau (Mahupuku?), sent by Davies for publication. An unsigned paper in Maori is probably the letter referred to. Description: Correspondence, Maori waiata and research papers relating to Maori performing arts, song lists and photographic prints. Includes a copy of a letter from Leo Fowler to the publisher Collins relating to the manuscript for his novel "Brown Conflict" which was published in 1959, also a copy of a letter to P Panapa in Tokoroa from Fowler, and a copy of a letter from H Te Kani Te Ua relating to an upcoming hui and the marae committee giving Fowler special rights in regards to recording the event [details unknown as to which event]. Also includes a copy of a poem "He Maoritanga" and the lyrics and research notes relating to the patere "Whangaramai-i-Tawhiti" and the dust jacket for "Ancient voyagers in the Pacific" by Andrew Sharp. Photographic prints include one of an unidentified baby and unidentified woman outside a suburban house ca. 1950s, and one of Leo Fowler sitting on a couch with two unidentified women and an unidentified man ca. 1960s, a small colour print of a group [possibly military] lined up on an unidentified field with a crowd present, and a black and white print of two boys in swimming costumes and sunhats bathing outside a suburban house in Beatty Bros metal washtubs [possibly Fowler's children?]. Includes images of an unidentified guide wearing a headscarf and carrying a basket, four young women doing a poi dance in front of thermal area, a portrait of a kapa haka performer in front of carved wharenui at the Whakarewarewa Model Pa, and a boy standing in front of thermal area with Whakarewarewa Village, including Church of the Immaculate Conception, in the background. Three slides are mounted in metal and glass slide holders constructed by Fijn. Description: Colour slide photographs taken by John Reinder Fijn of kapa haka performers at Whakarewarewa Pa, circa 1960s Features six young Maori performers in their teens or early twenties dressed in kapa haka costume including piupiu, pare, tatua, and tipares. The boys perform a haka and one girl, featured in a number of images, performs a poi dance. Two images show the group performing in a waka formation. A number of carved whare are seen in the background. Slides are mounted in metal and glass slide holders constructed by Fijn. Also includes a photograph of a horse-drawn carriage in front of the clock tower in Gisborne, with two unidentified women and one man [the driver] in the carriage, ca 1960.
