Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Views of New Zealand taken by Sir Edmund Oswald Teale, who visited New Zealand to attend a meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in Dunedin between December 1903 and January 1904. Images include a number showing geological formation along the route between Napier and Taupo; images of hot springs and mud pools, and the Aratiatia Rapids; Napier and Wellington. Views of the South Island include many in the Mount Cook region, and show various glaciers, including the Tasman Glacier, Hochstetter Glacier, and the Hooker Glacier; geological aspects of moraines, crevasses and moulins associated with glaciers; Lake Pukaki; alpine flowers in the Tasman Valley; a carriage and horses near the Hermitage, with Mount Sefton visible behind; the Mataura River and Bluff. Photograph number 35 shows seven guides with a coiled climbing rope and two crossed ice picks in front. A large proportion were taken by Kate Gardiner (nos. 1-10, 13-30, 33, 54, 66-94). Other identified photographers are G E Mannering (nos 136-141, 143, 146-149); Miss Joachim (nos 37, 48-50, 56-57, 63-65, 148, 15-153); Miss Theomin (nos 31, 35-36, 38-43, 53, 55, 144, 145); Tudor Collins (nos 45-47, 52); and Marcel Kurz (nos 95-135, 142). Image no. 63 shows a party of men and women at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound) showing some of the women wearing veils over their hats for protection from sandflies; image no. 79 "Phantom canoe as seen on Lake Tarawera" is an artist's impression of the phantom canoe which appeared to a group of tourists on Lake Tarawera on May 31st prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10th 1886 and which was considered to be a bad omen; image no. 82 shows a collage "No. 1. Maori Land.
