Description: The British attack on Kapotai Pa, Waikare Inlet, Bay of Islands. Several armed redcoats by a clump of bushes in the foreground, other soldiers and "friendly" Maori firing from behind a line of bushes in the middle distance towards the fenced pa site set against hills. A European house outside the fencing on the right has other Maori around it. This attack took place in the Omapere area, a week after the attack on Puketutu Pa. Kapotai Pa was on one of the head creeks of the Waikare Inlet. Bridge organised a boat expedition to Kapotai Pa and burned the pa while the friendly Maori, under Tamati Waka Nene, fought the Kapotai in the bush. By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865
Reference: B-031-035
Description: Shows Fort Richmond, a group of voluntary militia on a road, and the Hutt River with a canoe As the fort was not constructed (under the direction of Captain Compton of Lower Hutt) until 1845 and Brees left Wellington in 1845, this work must have been painted in that year. The 58th Regiment occupied the fort immediately after it had been completed in April 1845. The soldiers shown are militia, civilian volunteers, identifiable from their mixture of red and blue uniforms. Not reproduced as engraving in Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847), although another view of the fort is shown as Plate 10, no.33. Brees' text on page 22 of Pictorial Illustrations gives considerable details about the plan and cost of the fort. Inscriptions: Backing board recto - Opened 1844. Description: Red-coated soldiers (probably from the 58th Regiment) in the foreground, groups of Maori men and women, canoes drawn up on the shore of the Hutt River, the palisades of the pa in the background, with tall trees beyond. Several Maori are carrying bundles on their backs, possibly of potatoes, since Brees mentions "extensive potato grounds" around the pa in his text on p.30 of Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand Plate 18, No 54; also reproduced in Brees' Guide and description of the panorama of New Zealand (London, 1849) Date of original is likely to be 1845, since the soldiers shown did not occupy the Hutt Valley until 1845. The pa was located on the east bank of the river close to the site of the present Melling Bridge. Brees mentions that Makaenuku Pa was built by Porirua Maori after 1840. Description: The river in the foreground with a Maori canoe, an arched bridge and Fort Richmond in the middle ground, hills in the distance In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 11, No 33 text p 22 Brees, in his "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" notes: The Hutt Bridge was opened in the month of April 1844 ... The view is taken looking down the stream, and shows Fort Richmond, which was constructed under the direction of captain Compton, an enterprising settler of the Hutt ...[here follows considerable detail about the construction, dimensions and price of the fort] ... The excitement which was felt at the Hutt when a party of the 58th regiment took up their quarters in the fortress on the morning of 24 April 1845, will not soon be forgotten ... the settlers had just completed it on the evening of the previous day when an attack was expected from the natives... As Brees left New Zealand in 1845, his drawings for this engraving must have been completed in 1845 A related, but not identical watercolour is held by the Library (IRN 82218), showing the fort and bridge from a different angle, with a party of military.
