Description: Most of the New Zealand images relate to the Nelson family, their farms, farm houses, and farm buildings in the Pori area, north eastern Wairarapa, and scenic views of the area such as the Makuri River, a waterfall at Tiraumea, Annedale north of Tainui, the Pori Bridge, and native forest. The images of the farm houses include building a stable and buggy house, views of the yard with washing drying, a hen run, and a view of the dining room at "Ruatea". Four images are of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are three photographs of local Maori, one of bullock teams at Tiraumea, snow covered landscape at "Nga Mahanga", a picnic group with horses and buggys, and many views of the countryside from the Nelson farms showing cleared, partially cleared and forested land, much of it covered with the gaunt trunks of burnt off bush. There are group photographs of the families and friends. As well as the men these include women (wives?) Lucy, Katie, and Winifred, and children, Robert, Frances, and Dorothea. Other new Zealand houses include two probably located at Annedale with the names "Te Hoe" and "Manawa", and another in Featherston called "Newstead". Description: The two Nelson farms in this album are "Nga Mahanga" (Hugh Nelson's place), and "Taumata" (Jack Nelson's place). Views show the farm houses, and farm buildings, the farm land and landscape of the Pori area partially cleared of bush. One group of images shows the countryside under snow. There are a series of five images recording the building of a stables and buggy house, also a view of the woolshed and sheep at "Taumata". Scenic views of the area include the Makuri River ford, native forest interiors with pongas, and native forest. Four images show the interior of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are two photographs of local Maori standing beside tents in a bush clearing, one of army volunteers in uniform standing in front of tents, two of soldiers at an unidentified event, many of horses, some of hens, dogs, cats, and cattle. Two prints show one of the Nelson brothers cutting long grass with a scythe and 4 others are views of an unidentified house and its garden at Tiraumea (a distant view of this house surrounded by pinus radiata shelter belts and its surrounding countryside can be seen in album PA1-o-1206, page 7 captioned "Tiraumea"). There are also some images of "Newstead" the Monckton family home at Featherston. There is only one photograph of a Nelson family group. The rest are individual images of adults and children which include: Frederick Monckton, Lucy Miller (who married Frank Nelson), Winifred, [Lornie?], Dorothea, [Frances?], the brothers and the children. Description: Views of annexation ceremonies, of the local people and their leaders, of Lord Ranfurly and his party which included Naval personel from the Mildura who added presence to the occasions and raised flags during the ceremonies. There are photographs of two lepers on Molokani Island in the Penryn group and the Governor on a pearl shell diving boat on Manihiki. On the way back to New Zealand the Mildura stoped at the Kermadec Islands. Photographs were taken of Sunday (Raoul) and Macaulay Islands, and of the crater on Curtis Island. This part of the album ends with the Mildura in Lyttelton Harbour and the Governor coming ashore in a boat. Most of the rest are scenic shots of the Tourist highlights of New Zealand. There are three photographs of women crossing the Tasman Glacier and boiling a billy. The album ends with a group of photographs of the Channel Islands According to a note at the front of the album, all photographs, other than the New Zealand scenic tourist shots, were taken either by Captain Baynes or P M May, Surgeon, both of HMS Mildura. However, this is one of several albums recording the annexation of the Cook Islands held in the Photograph Archive. Many of the same images occur in all of them and a large number of these came from negatives held in the Malcolm Ross Collection. Malcolm Ross was a New Zealand Journalist who as the correspondent for the Times news paper, accompanied Lord Ranfurly's party on the Mildura, and was responsible for photographing the occasion. It was selected with some other items in July 1935 by Dr Scholefield, New Zealand Parliamentary Librarian, during a visit to Hampton Court Palace where Isabel Baynes lived. From 1935 to 1998 the album was housed in the New Zealand Parliamentary Library.

Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Talks about working for the NZ Forest Service in the holidays, becoming a ranger trainee in the Ashley Forest in 1968 and training at the Forest Ranger school in Rotorua in 1969. Describes supervising gangs in the Balmoral Forest and then returning to Ashley Forest as a ranger between 1971 and 1976. Talks about getting married and living in the forestry village. Describes the different career structures of rangers and foresters. Notes that there were six conservancies and conservators were usually foresters (usually graduates) rather than rangers. Describes being in charge of the Te Kao subdivision of Aupori Forest and becoming familiar with Maori culture. Talks about planting marram and trees. Describes a two year Foreign Affairs secondment, supervising tree planing in Western Samoa, as a positive family experience. Describes living in the Public Service Hostel, his work in the accounts and personnel section and staff of the Commission. Talks about becoming Staff Training Officer with the Commission and then joining the New Zealand Forest Service in this same position. Comments on the positive attitude of the Forestry Service to training and rivalry between foresters and rangers. Describes two years spent as the Private Secretary to the Minister of Forests, Duncan McIntyre. Gives details of his work and recalls their positive working relationship.
