Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Views of the Southern Lakes District, interspersed with a few scenes in the North Island taken by the Burton Brothers and Muir & Moodie between about 1885 and 1919. Most of the places mentioned are listed above. Image no. 63 shows a party of men and women at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound) showing some of the women wearing veils over their hats for protection from sandflies; image no. 79 "Phantom canoe as seen on Lake Tarawera" is an artist's impression of the phantom canoe which appeared to a group of tourists on Lake Tarawera on May 31st prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10th 1886 and which was considered to be a bad omen; image no. 82 shows a collage "No. 1. Maori Land. The portraits are originals - taken from life"; image no. 094 shows a close-up view of the "wire tram" over the Taramakau River; no. 095 shows a logging tramway in the Taupaki Kauri Bush belonging to Matthew Henry Roe, while no. 120 shows his Kauri Point Sawmill, with the paddle steamer "Oregon" in the background; no. 096 shows a self-acting tramway incline at Wairongomai used for gold extraction; nos 104 and 105 show gold dredges, "the Dunedin Gold Dredge" and "Sew Hoy's Dredge". Description: Photographs of areas in the South Island taken by various identified and unidentified photographers, with several taken by "Guy" (i.e. Guy Clayton Morris). Photographs include a very clear image of the interior of a mountain hut (no. 04) showing two unidentified men, one lying on an upper bunk and the other seated on a box under the window, cooking and kitchen equipment and a metal-bound soda siphon. There are two interior photographs of the Hermitage, one showing the closed-in verandah, and the other showing the dining room. Others of interest are an early view of the first Lower Greenstone Huts, and one which is possibly of the early days of William Batson's accomodation house. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Railways album 11

Description: Album of publicity photographs, chiefly taken by unidentified photographers in the 1930s. Many are photographs of posters, artwork and advertisements, all emphasising the beauty of New Zealand, and how easy it is to travel through the country by rail, and by the New Zealand Railways bus and ferry services. Some of the artwork was done by Stanley Davis (one photograph shows the funeral of S. Davis, with the hearse parked outside the funeral parlour in Kent Terrace, Wellington); and by Marmaduke Matthews. (On page 53 there is a photograph of a black and white sketch of Victoria University College, by Marmaduke Matthews). There is a photograph also of the painting of Sir Ernest Rutherford, by Oswald Birley. Photographs of places include a sequence showing the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery in Wellington, with an exterior view with the Carillon, and interior views of museum exhibits, art gallery spaces (including one room containing the Murray Fuller Exhibition of Contemporary British Art), and the tea-rooms. Several views show the exterior and interior of the Alexander Turnbull Library, with Clyde Taylor the librarian in two scenes seated at his desk, and one of a reader in the reading room. Another sequence shows horses, sheep and bulls being readied for transportation by ferry. Two group portraits are associated with the Empire Games, one entitled `Empire athletes', and the other showing cyclist Roy Taylor with a group. Other group portraits are not identified, though one is entitled `Staff Xmas party 1937'. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Shows the early accommodation house or hotel at the head of the Pukaki River, the southern end of Lake Pukaki, the ferry over the Pukaki River, part of Ben Ohau and the Liebig Ranges and Mount Cook in the distance. A horse and cart are being moved over the river on the ferry. Compare a photograph of a very similar view supposedly "from a watercolour by E. Norman, entitled [Lake Pukaki showing original accommodation house, since burnt down] Title from ink inscription on secondary support, below image. By the same artist as A-049-036. The hotel was built in 1863. The ferry was built in 1876. Both hotel and ferry were moved to the site shown here at the source of the Pukaki River in 1878. The accommodation house was enlarged in 1885. It caught fire in 1891, but was rebuilt. The site was bridged in 1895. The watercolour must date from between 1878 and 1895, perhaps from the middle period of about 1885. Edmund Norman, referred to in the similar view held by the Library (NON-ATL-0185) died in 1875, the year before the ferry was built and 3 years before the accommodation house was moved to this site. He could not have been the artist of this view (A-049-035) or the related view. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
