Description: The papers consist of: Application form and land documents to support the application submitted by Robert Gillow Elliott; history of the family's ownership; Plan of Mangatahi; `The Mangatahi Settlement, particulars, terms and conditions', 1907 (photocopy of printed material). Original owner was Robert William Andrew Elliott who acquired 568 acres of the Mangatahi Block by ballot in 1907. On his death in 1933 the farm was run as an estate by his wife Ruby. After her death it was farmed in partnership by their children Joyce and Robert. After three years Robert leased his sister's share, until 2003 when he bought her out. In 2007 it was being run by Robert's son David. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Description: The collection comprises correspondence between various members of the Hadfield family; most addressed to Frederick George Hadfield and his wife, Jessie, at Awaiti (Awaroa). Also includes school exercise book possibly belonging to Edith Reynolds or Edith Hadfield with transcript or original story, `The Renegade's daughter' and `The Far end of nowhere', church newsletters, greetings cards, some personal papers and other material. The correspondence deals largely with family matters and concerns, and includes some courtship letters from Frederick to Jessie, and letters from their son Nelson I Hadfield who served in World War II. Description: View of Dunedin in 1849 taken from a park-like foreground area with a man, a woman, and a child admiring the view, framed by trees, with the embryo town in the middle distance on the left, the harbour on the right and hills in the background. Based on a watercolour in the Hocken Library, completed 1849. The lithograph is considered to have been published approximately 1853. "Little Paisley" (the name is no longer current) was so named because it was a settlement of weavers, from Paisley. It was on the site of the present Southern Cemetery. Description: Collection comprises typed transcriptions (analogue & electronic) of three letters from C M Igglesden in Wellington to his father in Chatham, Kent, describing the situation in New Zealand with the start of the New Zealand wars in Taranaki; he discusses the points of view of the settlers, the government, the Maori, his feelings about the destruction caused by war, the place of Christianity, his impression of Donald McLean and related matters. Igglesden kept a diary-letter during his 81-day voyage from England to Melbourne on the Mermaid and the extracts cover his experiences from when he reached the Australian coast in Feb 1856, and also from a letter written after his arrival at Wellington in 1857; he discusses the situation for new migrants.
