Date: 1848 - 1852

By: Warre, Henry James, 1819-1898; Gold, Charles Emilius, 1809-1871; Webster, Kenneth Athol, 1906-1967

Reference: A-172-013

Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. The group of four was reattributed to Gold in 2011 Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil 222 x 285 mm

[Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :[Town of Wellington, New Zealand, 1845 or 1847?]

Date: 1844 - 1846

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Hatton, Walter Scarlett, 1873-1938

Reference: B-061-003

Description: A view from below the summit of The Terrace, looking south down onto Te Aro and along the beach towards Mount Victoria and Oriental Bay. There are houses along the shoreline, a jetty, Manners Street runs parallel to the shore and there are houses dotted back over the flat land. There is low scrub in the foreground Appears to be a copy of the left side of of S C Brees' "Te Aro flat from near Captain Sharpe's residence" which shows Wellington in 1844 or 1845. (Panorama plate 66 in Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand, published London, 1847). Some details differ. The road in the left foreground is more marked, there are additional houses stretching back over the valley floor, and several buildings nearer the foreground are different from Brees' engraving, as are the details of the outline of Mount Victoria and the cliffs leading towards Oriental Bay. Several of these differences can also be observed in the wood engraving of the same view published in the Illustrated London News, 'Wellington, Te Aro flat' Sept 11 1847, p. 168, and in a related oil painting in the National Library of Australia. Both this watercolour and the oil painting may be copied from the Illustrated London news. The style of the watercolour is very like that of W. S. Hatton, who is known to have copied many views from the Illustrated London news, although his or her work was normally signed. Paper watermarked D & C Blauw Other Titles - Hatton, Walter Scarlett, 1873-1938 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on laid paper, 229 x 381 mm

Date: 1850 - 1870

By: Hawke's Bay Art Gallery and Museum

Reference: A-113-009

Description: A road in the left foreground, probably Ohiro Road, with bush, open fields and scattered houses on a sloping area, with dense housing and businesses on the flat shore area in the distance. The road running across the centre of the view into the housing on the left is probably Willis Street. The view looks north across the harbour towards the Hutt Valley. Several sailing ships and smaller boats are in the harbour. By same hand as A-113-010 [River flat and homestead, ca 1860] Originally catalogued as by an artist with surname Capot, on the grounds that a series of squiggles on the right side of the road in the left foreground could read "Capot" when turned upside-down. However, the marks are more likely to be intended to represent pebbles on the road. Other Titles - Capot [?] [Wellington from the Brooklyn Hills, ca 1860] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
