Description: Photograph album containing Taranaki scenes. Album created by John Strauchon, Chief Surveyor & Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Taranaki District between 1894 and 1902; photographs possibly taken by him? (Pages 32 onwards are empty). The first section of the album (pages 1-16) contain images of Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki), including two accomodation houses, the Manaia Mountain House (Or Dawson's Falls Mountain House), and the Egmont Mountain House; Fanthams Peak; the Kapuni Stream; and Bell's Falls and Dawson Falls. The second part of the album (pages 18-31) contains views in and around New Plymouth, including two of celebrations during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Description: Album of tourist photographs of the North Island from the 1880s, many taken by identified photographers including J M (Josiah Martin), the Burton Brothers, and Wheeler & Son. There are a number of images of Waiwera, including one of two whaleboats meeting a horse-drawn carriage transporting a group of people from a steamer to land. Photographs relating to Maori include views of Parihaka; Taipari's house at Thames; Ngati Maniapoto chief Wahanui at his house, Alexandra; a large group in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa; and one of Aporo and Ngareta at Wairoa. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Shows ground floor and first floor plans, front and side elevation, section AA of a two-storeyed wooden house with corner turret; and a plan and elevation of the outhouse (containing, WC, laundry and laboratory with fume chamber). Mrs Aston was the mother of Bernard Cracroft Aston, Chief Chemist at the Department of Agriculture, hence the laboratory equipment in the outhouse. The house was in Devon Street on building with the street name later changing to Fairlie Terrace. The house, now owned by Victoria University, still stands (2008). Description: The third and right-hand section of a three part panoramic view of New Plymouth, shortly after its establishment as a New Zealand Company settlement. Shows the South end of the town and the Sugar Loaf Islands. Named features are "Mr Rundell['s house]. Mr Newland. Mr Shepherd. Mr Lewthwaite. Labourers Residences commonly called Devonport. Pare Tutu. Motu-o-Mahanga or Island of Flight. Moturao or Tall Island 200 feet high. The accompanying text reads: The spectator stands with his back to the sea, in the garden of the [New Zealand or Plymouth] Company's agent. There is only an open Roadstead [Harbour] here, and the colonists are essentially agricultural. Surf-boats, however, and excellent moorings, provided by the Company, facilitate the landing of passengers and goods. Mount Egmont is distant about fifteen miles. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Album compiled circa 1863-5, by Spencer P T Nicholl of the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry. Some photographs taken by John Kinder. Photographs include images relating to military life, including the Oakura Redoubt, the Kaitake Redoubt, officers of the 68th regiment, military camps in Taranaki, and the Militia Hospital in New Plymouth. Pages 15-18 have the pencilled caption `Lake Taupo', but in fact are photographs of the volcanic area around Lake Rotomahana, and were taken by John Kinder in 1865. They include a sulphur volcano (whakataratara), the Whatapoho geyser, Otukapuarangi (Pink Terraces), and the Tarata or principal boiling springs. Pages 19-32 contain portraits of Maori men and women, some of which have pencilled captions. Inscriptions: Album page - `Spencer p.T. Nicholl (subsequently Lieut.
