Description: The volume comprises Elizabeth Colenso (née Fairburn), a biography by her eldest granddaughter, Frances Edith Swabey which covers the years 1819-1904 (45 & 49 pages); an Account of a visit by the Turakina to the Crozet Islands, Feb 1907, by F M Simcox (6 pages); an account of the golden wedding of W H & F M Simcox, 1920, from the Otaki Mail, (3 pages); a dedication of the Simcox Memorial Window in All Saints Church, Otaki, 1930, from the Otaki Mail (3 pages); an incident in W M Simcox's life and poem entitled `Kapiti Island' (3 pages) and a reference to Stratford House at Camp Hill, Birmingham, England. There are two indexes, one for pages 1-45, the other for pages 108-122. F S Simcox compiled this volume in stages, beginning in 1955 when his eldest sister, Edith Swabey, asked him to type Elizabeth Colenso's biography; as time passed additional projects presented which now form part of the volume: accounts of a visit to the Crozet Islands by F M Simcox, of the golden wedding of W H and F M Simcox, a dedication of a stained glass window, an incident in W M Simcox's life and information about Stratford House, Birmingham, a history of which had been written by J W Simcox. Description: Reminiscences of the Bay of Islands, 1830s-1840s; letter from Fairburn's sister, Esther Hickson (1908); and extract on Hongi Hika from Carleton's life of Henry Williams. Records an early amputation of an infected leg carried out by William Williams, assisted by E T Fairburn, at Paihia, on a Mr Gray, a blacksmith, ca 1832. Mention of "first game of cricket in New Zealand" at Paihia, ca 1832 or 1833. Description: Includes papers relating to Colenso's Maori lexicon, some correspondence (1836-1899), and another group of correspondence between Colenso and Andrew Luff (1875-1893). These last refer to Luff's financial affairs and to Colenso's own activities in and around Napier. There is also a collection of untranslated Maori letters (1841-1855), most addressed to Colenso as missionary at the Waitangi Mission Station; these letters contain details about the activities and plans of the Maori teachers, parishioners and others within Colenso's `parish' of Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa. Description: A lawn in front, with croquet hoops, inset garden and winding paths on both sides, leading to the house, with an outbuilding on the right and trees on both sides. A woman is moving along the path on the right and another on the path on the left. Henry Williams moved into this house in 1830. There is a drawing of the house by him in Auckland Institute and Museum, location PD 52 (2). The Library has a photograph of the drawing under Williams, Henry. House at Paihia ... 1830. Possibly the work of T B Hutton, Williams' son-in-law. He visited Paihia about 1858-1860. The style appears similar to his work. Other Titles - Archdeacon Henry Williams' house. Thomas Biddulph Hutton, 1859 1860 Inscriptions: Recto - Old mission house at Paihia. Archdeacon Henry Williams' house later mostly demolished by Rev. Burrows. Re Mrs Colenso making mortar from observing Bp Williams making it for building stone building close to this house (lathe & plaster) which was the 1st stone house built in N.Z. - Burnt down & ruins now stand.
