Description: Gordon Coates and his wife on tour. Most of these photographs relate to Coates' as MP and Minister of Public Works. Most of the events record the trials and tribulations of journeying to remote parts of New Zealand to open bridges, post offices, power plants etc. The album also records some of the social and recreational events associated with the tours. According to Gordon Coates' daughter, Mrs Sheila Pryde, this album belonged to Gordon Coates' wife Marjorie, who collected, and may have taken some of the snaps when she accompanied her husband travelling in various parts of New Zealand. Description: Photographs of the Royal visit in 1927 of the Duke and Duchess of York, taken by an unidentified photographer. None of the photographs have captions. Images include the royal entourage driving or travelling by train through New Zealand countryside in the South Island and the North Island; various ceremonies, welcoming crowds, a large group of nurses lining the steps up to a hospital, various dignitaries, and inspection of troops and police. Two photographs show the Royal camp at Tokaanu, and one shows rows of people seated at tables in the open air. A number of more personal images show the Duke and Duchess, the Duke outside smoking a pipe, the Duke at a racecourse with a trotting horse and sulky, and the Duke and Duchess fishing near Turangi. Description: The papers comprise correspondence with individuals, libraries and other sources of information on Coates; transcripts of interviews; newspaper clippings; photocopies and originals of official and private papers; pamphlets and draft chapters, with some commentary from the publisher's reader. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - See TAPUHI for other Sutch papers Arrangement: Approximately half of the records have been arranged and indexed in numbered files. The remainder are unnumbered papers and chapter drafts. From ca 1967 until his death in 1975, Dr Sutch collected material and wrote preliminary chapters for a proposed biography of Joseph Gordon Coates, under whom he had served as secretary between 1933 and 1935. He also speaks of various frictions with Gordon Coates and others, pigeon poaching and other incidents leading to his dismissal.
