Description: Album begins with Wellington Hospital in about 1927/28 and shows the new buildings which opened in 1928, the nurses home and Toxwood's hospital buildings of 1880. There are many photographs of nurses, some staged in operating theatres with doctors and nurses arround the patient, one administering chloroform onto a fabric pad over the patients face. The rest of the photographs in the album relate to Doris Pedersen's work in maternity hospitals and hospitals specialising in the care of very young children. These include Alexandra Children's Hospital, Karitane Hospital, a hospital in a large late victorian house with a big garden, and Dr Doris and William Gordon's Marire Private Hospital in Stratford.. Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Childhood in the Kumeu-Huapai district oral history project

Description: Interviews with a number of people who spent their childhood in this rural district north west of Auckland City during the 1910s and 1920s. The area was long used as a portage by Maori between the Kaipara and Waitemata harbours. Pakeha initially settled during the mid to late 1800s and, after forest and gum clearance, the area was slowly developed into dairy farms. In 1915 nearly 5000 acres of scrubland at Kumeu North (renamed Huapai) were subdivided as orchards, mixed farms and weekend homes. There was an influx of new residents (including weekend only residents) following this. Huapai School opened in 1919. Description: Includes a copy of the deed from the minute book of 1910 in the opening pages. Deed outlines the general objectives and purposes of St Marys' Guild, rules pertaining to Guild trustees and membership, names of elected officers. The minutes detail the number of children in care, attending school, returning to their mothers; further entries include vistors' names, comments on girls leaving and returning to the Home, financial accounts, administrative records etc. Guild reports indicate that on average twenty-six girls resided at the main home and fourteen younger girls at Duncan Cottage during this period Relationship complexity - Loose material removed from volume is at MS-Papers-1925-39/1 Quantity: 1 volume(s).

Description: Michael Wilson (7) oils the chain on his bicycle, while sister Bronwyn (10) makes sure her tyres are fully inflated. Behind are the Aitken brothers, Andrew (10), and Peter (11). The children were neighbours and lived in Maungaraki. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 25th of march 1983. The children were preparing to take part the next day in a "Bike for Fun" in Lower Hutt. This was a 17 kilometre ride beginning at Avalon Park organised by the Western Hutt Rotary Club. The Police encourage IBM to take their INCIS computer and jump off a bridge. IBM spent millions of taxpayer dollars on creating a new Police computer system that never worked. Mt Eden prison guards try to work out how prisoners are getting out and drugs getting in. Admidst the ruins of Belgrade Milosevic stands victorious. The Police consider getting rid of the INCIS computer to a crime consortium believing it will stop them dead in their tracks like it has done to the Police. Milosevic uses peace talks to buy time to destroy war crimes evidence. Police operations are stoped in their tracks by the weight of the INCIS computer disaster. Comment on retailers selling liquor to underagedrinkers The Serbs pull out of Kosovo as Nato forces enter the area. Comment on the New Zealand cricket team making hard work out of limited over cricket. The Soviets welcome the Nato forces to Yugoslavia. Shows a ship load of Chinese boat people on a collision course with New Zealand as the National coalition Government passes emergency legislation allowing mass, indefinite detention of asylum seekers. Inland Revenue Department assures the public that all small and powerless taxpayers are bullied equally. Serbia puts the blame for large scale death and destruction in Kosovo on the Nato bombing campaign. Shows newspaper ad for a crown entity boss, all perks and no responsibility. Minister of Immigration, Tuariki Delamere sets one standard for migrants and another for himself and his family. Jenny Shipley shoots TV news presenter, John Hawkesby in the head with a rubber arrow. He received a substantial pay-out when his contract was terminated. The Mongrel Mob supports Tony Ryall's plans to introduce tougher penalties for home invasion, if it relates to their homes being invaded but not their neighbours. Comment on breach of privilege by the Prime Minister Jenny Shipley and TVNZ over the John Hawkesby pay-out. Rugby supporters froze to their seats during a recent rugby match.
