Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). Image no. 25 has identification which reads "Organs - Sandstone cliffs on Mahaka (Mohaka?) River, Hawke's Bay. Image no. 34 shows Samuel Butler's cottage at Mesopotamia Station; and no. 56 probably shows the Cass Field Station. Many of the images by Marcel Kurz show mountaineers, bivouacs and camping sites in the mountains, including the Pioneer Ridge Bivvy. Image no. 133, taken by Marcel Kurz shows Ned Porter, Clive Barker and Doris Barker (later Mrs Porter), on the second ascent of Mount Haidinger in 1927. Most identified places are listed above. Most of the places mentioned are listed above. Image no. 63 shows a party of men and women at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound) showing some of the women wearing veils over their hats for protection from sandflies; image no. 79 "Phantom canoe as seen on Lake Tarawera" is an artist's impression of the phantom canoe which appeared to a group of tourists on Lake Tarawera on May 31st prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10th 1886 and which was considered to be a bad omen; image no. 82 shows a collage "No. 1. Maori Land. The portraits are originals - taken from life"; image no. 094 shows a close-up view of the "wire tram" over the Taramakau River; no. 095 shows a logging tramway in the Taupaki Kauri Bush belonging to Matthew Henry Roe, while no. 120 shows his Kauri Point Sawmill, with the paddle steamer "Oregon" in the background; no. 096 shows a self-acting tramway incline at Wairongomai used for gold extraction; nos 104 and 105 show gold dredges, "the Dunedin Gold Dredge" and "Sew Hoy's Dredge". Godber album 2

Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber, chiefly between 1934 and 1947, but including copies of some of his earlier photographs. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House. Salmon album 11

Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples).
