Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Photographs taken between 1888 and circa 1929, chiefly by James Caleb Cornwall of his family, life, and work. Identified photographers of studio portraits include George Gregory (Auckland), Berry and Company (Wellington), Illingworth Toska Studio (Wanganui), Canadian Studio (Auckland), and Bunting Studio (Palmerston North). Many photographs in the album are captioned underneath the image or on the rear of the print. - Contains images relating to Cornwall's work as a creamery manager and farmer. Photographs feature creamery buildings and machinery, the transportation of milk products by horse and cart, and creamery workers. A number of buildings have the text 'NZ Farmers Dairy Union' painted on them. Farming images feature ploughing, clearance of land, and livestock portraits of cattle and horse prepared for showing. cows, and horses. Various dogs, a pig, and chickens are also seen. - Album features images of areas where Cornwall lived and worked. Locations covered are mainly in the Manawatu-Whanganui Region and include Linton, Shannon, Mangaramarama, Pahiatua, Longburn, Konini, Oringi, Upper Hutt, and Woodville. Specific locations are the farm of R D Knight at Mangaramarama (near Pahiatua), including scenes from Knight's annual horse sale, the Gaseford [Gaisford?] family property at Oringi, the Longburn Freezing Works, Pahiatua train station. Also included are photographs of houses (one hand coloured), cottages, farm buildings, and a bush camp. - James Cornwall appears in many images and his his friends, family, and associates (including employers) are included. Archie Curry, Florence Swan, Jack Capel, Rob Roy, Leo Harding, R D Knight, Ethel Bailey, Phoebe Bailey, Lucy Bailey, Phoebe Swan, Sydney 'Sid' James Short, Fred Bliss, and Jimmy Muir are identified. Prime Minister Richard Seddon is also seen in one image. Album also contains a group portrait of suppliers to the Upper Hutt creamery and another of the Woodville Fire Brigade. Unidentified people include an ex-girlfriend of Cornwall's (a teacher), men at a bush camp, men driving milk carts, and an unidentified family group. - Futher images include the transportation of wood by horse and cart, flooding at Konini, and some images relating to trains (bridges, locomotives, and carriages). Arrangement: Plastic sleeves removed from original orange plastic clear file photograph album (31.5 x 25 cm) due to conservation concern with tight binding warping prints. Title transcribed from item. Some slides are not dated. Arrangement: The first of two boxes of slides labelled 'Industrial'. Transparencies were arranged in a 6-row, 50 slides per row, plastic case, and slides of similar structures were grouped together. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes a view of cows in trial harnesses at the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre; the Anchor Butter factory at Te Awamutu (Te Awamutu Dairy Factory); the main street in Te Awamutu and the Riverina Hotel; the Waikato River from various angles; the Sand, Shingle, Metal works beside the Waikato River; two views of audience and participants at the Ngaruawahia Regatta; Queen Street in Auckland and views in the area including Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, Devonport area, Panmure and Mount Wellington, and the crater on Mount Eden. Slides on this sheet are numbered 408-432 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 414, 420, 426-427) showing Main Street in Te Awamutu; looking down the Waikato River with the road bridge; Queen Street, Auckland and view of Rangitoto and Auckland Harbour. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). The first slide shows the house at 48 Hume Street, Crows Nest, Sydney owned by friends of Mr Williams. The next group are taken from a published guide to the Tarawera eruption, some showing the area before the eruption and one of the effects after the eruption. The following slides show scenes on the West Coast and Canterbury. Many relate to geological and rock formations, including Punakaiki pancake rocks, a sample of orbicular granite at Karamea and a high terrace at Karamea, rocks in the sea at Scotts Bay, cliffs on the Rakaia River, and moraine at Franz Josef Glacier. There are also images of white rata, cows heading to milking and on pasture, and a butter factory in Christchurch. The last two images were taken by Neville Hatwell, one of the Tasman Glacier from the air, and one of the road over the Crown range. Slides on this sheet are numbered 746-897, with nos. 756 to 825 (all on Australia) removed for a lecture series which Mr Williams gave when he returned to England. Those removed are filed in a later sequence. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 898-899, 901, 903, 905, and 921-922) to create representative collections on New Zealand and Australia which he used in lecture series on his return to England.
