Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Shows a general view of Whakarewarewa village, probably from sketches made in 1885 and 1886. Shows an arched bridge over the foreground stream, a small hut beside the bridge and about two dozen larger huts and whare. There are numerous steaming vents in the ground. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C Blomfield 1888 Blomfield visited and sketched in the area in 1875, 1885-1886; see notes in Dunbar Sloane auction catalogue for 29 August 2001, page 22. Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 900 x 492 mm (sight) Provenance: Previously listed with the International Art Centre, Auckland, in 1975 and 1976 This may have been one of the works mentioned in Blomfield's Pictures Sales Record Book in the Auckland Museum, where it is said that a Blomfield oil painting of Whakarewarewa sold on 12 April 1888 (measuring 12" x 36") to an Australian collector W R Wilson of Chetwynd, Melbourne; while another version was sold in London in 1888.

Description: Album compiled circa 1863-5, by Spencer P T Nicholl of the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry. Some photographs taken by John Kinder. Photographs include images relating to military life, including the Oakura Redoubt, the Kaitake Redoubt, officers of the 68th regiment, military camps in Taranaki, and the Militia Hospital in New Plymouth. Pages 15-18 have the pencilled caption `Lake Taupo', but in fact are photographs of the volcanic area around Lake Rotomahana, and were taken by John Kinder in 1865. They include a sulphur volcano (whakataratara), the Whatapoho geyser, Otukapuarangi (Pink Terraces), and the Tarata or principal boiling springs. Pages 19-32 contain portraits of Maori men and women, some of which have pencilled captions. Inscriptions: Album page - `Spencer p.T. Nicholl (subsequently Lieut.
